Advice for an ultra beginner?
Hi all,

I find this game ultra hard to step in. Never played a hoop game since nba street 3, so i'am out to date on almost every mechanic other than timing shot. I did a few of the game tutorials but it's really the basics.
I'am doing myCareer mode, with the 100k put in the player cuz i dont plan on doing myTeam. MP is 76ovl SG and he is an absolute victim.

From a player pov:
Most of my shoot are slightly off tempo, and rebound out of the hoop 60% of the time.
I dont know if it's me but sometimes i feel like 2 of my shoots were close to be the same, and one is green and the other is yellow / red. Also, sometimes i feel i'am perfectly in the arrow and i'am not, and sometimes i feel i'am waaaaaaaaay out, and i'am green.

Despite the few youtube videos i've check, i cant seems to understand how to dribble.
I use right stick to the opposite of my dribbling hand and the dude trigger a shot.
To the point my only technique is to ask the ball outside the circle, fake a movement forward and step back and try a 3pts. It works quite well cuz i'am always the top scorer of my team but i suppose i do something wrong^^
And i defence, well i'm basically a road block. The dude i mark just go past me and by the time my reflex make me follow him he got the position and the shoot.

From a team pov:
My teamates (i choosed the brooklyn net so i can have minutes) are statues compared to the other team, and my PG and absolute idiot who cant make a play for a dollar. If i have the ball, my teamate just dont move unless i ordered them to do so.

So i'll have a few questions.

-Is the learning curve that hard for a total beginner? Like the game overall looks nice but damn it's frustrating AF to see all my shots missing and all my dribbling just getting stopped by a guy standing (i took one of the most liked build from the community, so it shouldnt be total garbage).
-Should i just shot with square and forget about the right stick? I feel having more success with square but everybody seems to say it's better with the stick.
-Am i supposed to entirely organise my attack by setting manually screen etc., or do the game organise it itself and it's just my team (brooklin) who's ♥♥♥♥?
-What kind of shot timing (high in jump, ball release etc...) do you recommand? And what risk / reward do you recommand?
-How is supposed to work the L1 in game? Sometime it seems to indicate me where i should go, sometime it barely display ♥♥♥♥, or flash a position then disappear.

Before you say it, yes. It's a big case of skill issue.
But i'am completely overwhelmed by all the "strange" mechanics at a point i dont know what i do wrong. All i know is from the most viewed "beginner videos" on youtube, wich are for the most part just a repetition of really basic stuff. So if you have advices or tuto recommendations, i'll take it.

i would try to learn how to shoot with stick if i were you and also look into rhythm shooting if you don't know already and for jumpers i do high risk high reward and for lay up try normal risk and for your team in my-career i wouldn't even pass to them but if you want to. pass to them and then set them a pick. for the longest had such a hard time with this game as well

my advice is for you to not play this game. This game doesnt deserve your time, trust me.

I only browsed over this post and I can say to you man... dribble. You learn dribbling as soon as possible homie. Not just learn it but be good at it. Use anything and everything at your disposal...youtube videos, testing animations, examine other peoples' builds... anything. When you know how to dribble properly then use it as a weapon, this entire game will get on its knees. Everything else is fairly simple except for maybe building your jump shot.

Turn off passive dribble hand switches in the controller settings.
This is on by default and will mess you up real good.

76 OVR on Pro difficulty might be rough to play and you combine that with being new to the game. Drop the difficulty a bit. You are ment to be a victim from 60-80 OVR. This is the nature of all things in MyCareer.

Q&A:

-Is the learning curve...
learning curve will be slowed down a bit since you have a Myplayer with hardly no stats or badges. As a new player it's going to be rough yes. You can get the feel of the game better by playing other modes with real NBA players. You will execute plays and perform many things better compared to a 70 OVR MyPlayer.

-Should i just shot with square...
like many things in this game ... this is something that you will have to try for yourself and see what you like.

-Am i supposed to entirely organise my attack...
If you mean by playcalling then yes you can do this. You can turn automatic playcalling on in the coach settings I believe. You can also run plays manually. Many videos on youtube about this.

-What kind of shot timing (high...
High risk, No meter opens the green window nicely.
(push, release, whatnot will not matter with this setting I think) release at the top of the jump.

-How is supposed to work the L1 in game?...
Tapping L1 off-ball you may be able to get your teammates to set a screen for you. Yes it's strange to use but I think your position on the court while you do this matters a lot. it is much easier to do when you have the ball as you can get your big to screen for you. You will need to hold L1 in this situation as tapping will bring up playcalling. Try going to various places on the court before calling L1 off-ball and I think you may see better results. I also see my AI teammates ball hog sometimes and just attack the rim instead of following the L1 off-ball screen but I just live with it.

I would just quit, to be honest.

I have pretty good mechanical skill and am very detail oriented. Something seemed off the moment I began playing the game. My friend insists the shot stick mechanic is just new and skilled and will take time.

I can tell you with total confidence the game uses animations to force a score or reject a good shot at will. The better you get with the timing and tempo of shooting, you will notice more often good shots getting weird physics and just bouncing out randomly. Or you could shoot with consistently bad timing on purpose and notice the ball will get weird physics and bounce in sometimes.

If you watch instant replay it's extremely obvious they rig shots and manipulate other things to control how the game feels and steer outcomes. Like those free throws that stop moving at the backboard, and just buzz in place for a second, stop, then either roll forward or sideways. That's so obviously the game just forcing a score or rejection at will.

The more you play the more you'll notice it's just a bunch of forced animations and the game tries to screw you on purpose so you lose out on rewards and have to re-do stuff without any progress gained. It truly isn't based on your own skill, sadly.

I put my timing on low-risk, and I have my meter on. I never look at the meter, but it's on. Most of my shots are set to release, so I can stay true to the actual release point. I have a Center with a 75 3pt rating, and he knocks them down consistently. It's more about timing, than anything else. I look for a visual cue, for my release point. Generally, for me, it's when my feet start to go forward. As for square or right stick, I use square. I dictate the pace, myself, setting screens, creating space for teammates, etc. I don't call plays, either. As Burma said, "The game tries to screw you on purpose". Animations can kill the whole process of having fun in this game. I use both L2(LT), and R2(RT), on defense, play the passing lanes, but always try to leave space between. I also turn that pesky boxout assist off.
