How to Win Games
Hi I've been playing this game for approximately 10 hours now and have lost every single game; please explain general things I should do to win. I know that there are national differences as well as advagtages with each one but is there a universal plan to follow? If possible please focus on Americans or economic-based nations because I am more of the defensive type (I like preparing, making an absolute defensive fortress, big armies, etc.

Thank-you for your times and I am sorry for any inconveniences I may have caused.

Here are some points to consider. This list is not exhaustive, and I am a noob myself.

What ever you do in this game you need to do it quickly and efficiently.

1. Learn hotkeys. The moment the game starts press LTCVVA (Select library, research science, select city, build two villagers, set villager rally point to all resources near city).
2. Spend your resources as soon as you get them (unless you are saving up for something)
3. Scout (don't use auto-scout, do it manually setting way points, with SHIFT+RIGHT CLICK. If you want to insert a way point in the middle of a group of waypoints then use ALT +SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK. Early on I use villagers for scouting as well, partly to reveal as much of the map as quickly as possible, and partly to pick up bonuses from the ruins you will find.
4. Research Civic 1 immediatly Science 1 is finished (so within the first 15 seconds of the game). Then aim to start building your second city within the first minute of the game. But still make sure the location is good.
5. Use the pause key when you are learning to get better. You can issue commands while paused. Take the time to think about you are doing very carefully. For example read the descriptions and benefits of all the wonders.
6. Towers and Forts are best build immediately behind the city centre. Occasionally I will build a fort to push the borders, but generally speaking the fort will be vulnerable. Also build towers next to mines and lumber camps. Don't build them anywhere else.
7. Constantly cyle through the next reaserch options using the Tab key.
8. Build a market in Ancient age, and a temple as soon as you reach Medieval. As soon as you have built temple research Taxation.
9. Build a universtiy as soon as you hit classical
10. If you select a unit or building and then press the home key you will select all units/building of that type. Likewise hold the SHIFT key while press the hotkey to select a building or idle villager (for example) and you wil select all building of that type or all idle villagers. I might press SHIFT + K to select all barracks and then set a way point, and build units in all baracks simultaneously.

See these links for more suggestions:

Edit: One of those links suggests building a Temple in Ancient Age. I used to that but I don't know if there is that much benefit as I don't think you can research Taxation until Medieval. On the other hand building a temple early on will expand your borders making it easy to find a good location for the second city.

The Thrones and Patriots was distributed with a ReadMe.rtf that explained what do to in the first 5 minutes of game play... this Steam Extended Edition version does not have that ReadMe.rtf by the looks of it.

Anyone care to copy/paste the steps?
You can research taxation with 1 science and 1 civic.

Thanks. i must have had my wires crossed. So there could be an advantage to making a market and a temple in Ancient then?
Yeah, as +10 income plus taxation is worth more -relatively speaking- early on in the game than +10 income when you have seven cities all with markets except one.

You also need at least one market to buy sell stuff using the 'N' key (by default).

hehehehehehe.....

Yea ...... if you're talking about Multiplayer, that is totally expected. There's people playing for years in there with the most advanced tactics that would make even the original developers left in awe.....

But.... if you played for 10 hours, I'll assume that you're just fighting some comps on the difficulty of whatever is most comfortable to you.

Lashman got a lot of points right, re-read his post, it's got a lot of universal in-game strategy for you (it might not be 100% efficient for all nations, but it's still a great place to start for someone like yourself). My post is already gonna be super long (as always), so I won't bore you with any of my own crazy general in-game theories.

But, I'll give you the best out-of-game tip that will make you a great player. Wanna know what it is?.... ok.... here it is.....

Watch your replays twice, first from the winning side then from the losing side, no matter which side you're on

This is probably one of the best out-of-game tactic there is to make your in-game tactics more real (and you'd be surprised how many people DONT do this). It works a lot better in Multiplayer games but for a beginner such as yourself..... this will work for you just fine. You will see EXACTLY what the winning side did right, and you will see EXACTLY what the losing side did to ♥♥♥♥ up royally.

Also, you can watch replays of other people as well (even advanced players). Take a look at this site:

http://ronxtp.no-ip.org/gs_db.php?mode=ron_list&m=all_replays

This link should take you to the replays section (lemme know if the link doesn't work). You can download these replays and take a look at what the winning side did. Remember to only watch replays that say the Extended Edition.... and DONT watch any that say they are a Scenario (cuz they won't help you right now).

The other good out-of-game tactic that Lashman said was to look at strategy articles. He gave some pretty old school ones (I'm surprised he found WhiskeyFoxTrot), but here's one that you will also like as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------

But anyway...... just so respond to you're question on an American Boom tactic. The link I gave has a much better American strategy, but it involves ancient raiding, so I think that might be a little too advanced for you right now.

Anyway, I would totally follow this universal booming strategy

http://www.kingameya.com/2012/09/booming-expert-guidelines/

The catch is, I would build the Senate ASAP right after Classical and research all the green governments (Republic, Democracy, and Capitalism), because they are free for Americans.

I would also invest in Terra Cotta in Medieval, because they provide you with an LI every 30 seconds (not really 30 seconds but whatever). As Americans, you get +3 income whenever you get an infantry unit, so you get +3 income every 30 seconds, and since your first Wonder as Americans is always build instantly (except the last two Info Wonders), you gain this advantage instantly. It doesn't sound like much, but trust me, even after 3 minutes you have almost +20 income just for doing nothing. It honestly equates to a couple free techs, maybe another wonder if you're lucky enough, or just building a bigger army faster later on.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

And to respond to the Temple discussion up top..... it ultimately depends on the situation. If you need a fast 30 wealth in Ancient Age by giving up 80 wood (and it does happen.....), then go for it. If you're Russians, go for it (border push). If you're Koreans you auto-start with it (though there's a strategy that involves razing it to go to Sci 2 in ancient). If you're British or Persians then build it , because you get those taxation techs for half-price or free respectively.

If you're being rushed, then build it at your capital (if you have the wood.... don't sacrifice a much needed barracks or some archers for a temple though.)

Other than that, it's really up to you. Honestly though I don't research taxation until I need to.... maybe around Classical or Medieval (usually Medieval maybe).

The reason is, the 80 food and 80 wood is pretty expensive I would say for ancient (and even Classical depending on your situation), because that food and wood is better served elsewhere in such a food-deprived age. The best way to generate wealth is by caravans and rares (the reason people like Diamonds isn't just for the 10% commerce cap. That comes later. Advanced players do it for the wealth in the early game). Two Caravans = 30 Food and 70 Wood, much better investment long term for the first two ages.

I just re-read that file. Believe me, it doesn't have anything to do with in-game steps. It's mostly just troubleshooting and support for the old Edition. Nothing about strategy or anything like that.

No, the one I am thinking of contained 10 or more steps to get new players started quickly. It might not have been the ReadMe.rtf file but I am sure it was an *.rtf.

It might have come in with one of the patches for the original game?

Oh and about that, how do you use missles? I never understood how to use them. Thank-you for your time and I am sorry for any inconvenience.
My advice....

Never use a nuke on the Modern Age.... they are too weak, and costs too much knowledge during a still-knowledge deprived Age. Wait tI'll Info Age and get the ICBM to do damage.

When you have ur missile built, just right click on your target and it'll explode. Or... hit B and right click on the ground anywhere to bomb a specific location (rather than a specific building). That tactic would be better if u wanna nuke spam or need to target an army rather than a city or wonder.
