If you're a boomer, Hanging Gardens is a great choice due to fast eco upgrades and a boost in knowledge (especially if you build early).
If it's something like Nomad, though, Colossus is the goto Wonder (followed by Pyramids) because of the pop boost that is needed to make scholars without sh|tting on your army pop.
Then some other wonders are hand crafted for certain nations.Such as if you're Americans, Terra Cotta is PHENOMENAL because you get free infantry, which means bigger eco rate over time (it's basically like a free money making barracks when you build it).
Here's a great post on Age 2 Wonders: http://www.kingameya.com/2011/12/age-2-wonders/
But anyway, some of MY Favorite that you would ever see me build..... (in no particular order)
Hanging (if I build in II): The +50 knowledge will bring back the 200 Wealth investment because you initially save on Scholars, but the most important is the cheap Granary/Mill/Smelter Techs, which can instantly help boom your eco (it's saved my ass a bunch of times)
Versailles: Obvious library benefits, but probably the best MILITARY wonder, because of the supply wagon heal. If you have your fort techs researched, your army will be extremely powerful. This will make your army the best conventional army in the game (until Air Power becomes a big threat).
Porcelain Tower: If I'm in a Water map, or in a Nomad game, or if I'm Nubians. Because if you have all your rares, this provides a great boost to your eco by doubling the income from them. Which means if you have a lot of knowledge rares in a Nomad game, you can (possibly) get +999 knowledge income by V. Also faster ship building.
Colossus: If I'm in Nomad (so I have to mention it)..... otherwise no other reason
.... and then Supercollider if your game drags out long enough. The instant techs are phenomenal and gives you the edge in Future Techs.... but you also have command of the markets, so you can pretty much buy and sell anything without major penalty. That means you will have the strongest Eco in the end game.
Then again, don't spend all your recs on Wonders, especially in small map games. They might drain you from a raid defense or attack..... but if it's a boom game (or you just got some free cap plunder), and if circumstances allow you for safe wonder building, then go for it
Favorite wonders
1 Colossus (50 more population, yes!)
2 Versailles (healing the troops while in the field is quite handy)
3 Space Program (intell is the first thing one needs to win a war)
4 Kremlin (+200 production to all but knowledge)
5 Statue of Liberty (goodbye attrition)
6 Colosseum (extra attrition on your attackers)
7 Porcelain Tower (no more merchants needed, so they cannot be destroyed)
8 Angkor Wat (+100 metal production, and cheaper units)
9 Temple of Tikal (+100 timber production, and temple boost)
10 Eiffel Tower (+200 oil production, and +6 to borders)
*add to this the piramids (for +1 town)
*add the forbidden palace (for +1 town
*the mahal fortress (it needs no extra city)
(the rest is unobtainable without conquering city's of the enemy)
still, having 250 population that can all be fielded, autoheals, for the most part is 25% cheaper to make, and having a production of 700 food 800 wood 800 metal 800 oil and 100 knowlege (not taking into accound the knowledge income from rare resources) without having to use a single merchant, scientist or worker is not a bad thing.
Try getting my Red Fort!
