Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

[FIXED - solution inside] Game does not start
Downloaded and tried to launch the game today, I get "Preparing to launch..." in Steam, and then nothing. The game doesn't even start.

Tried verifying integrity of game cache, all fine. Tried restarting Steam, same issue. Specs:

Core i5 2500k
GTX 460 1GB (drivers up to date)
4GB RAM
Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (Windows Update fully up to date)

Low-ish specs (need a new PC soon) but supported by the system requirements so there should not be an issue. Certainly a disappointing start (if it can be called a start, since, you know, it didn't...) from a game I was looking forward to playing this weekend.

-------------------------------

EDIT (Solution to fix this issue)
Here is the solution I found that worked for me, hopefully it works for anyone else having the same issue:

- Go into the folder where RoN is installed (mine was c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\rise of nations)
- Go into the _CommonRedist folder > DirectX > Jun 2010 and run DXSETUP.exe, let it finish
- Go back to the _CommonRedist folder and then to vcredist > 2012 - install one (or both) of those, I installed both
- You should be able to run the game now

This is supposed to be done automatically by Steam when you first launch the game - whether it is Steam's fault or the developers' fault that this isn't being done for Rise of Nations, I don't know, but this seems to be why the game won't run until these setups are completed.

Did some more testing. Since the game doesn't launch through Steam I tried launching directly from the game folder.

Rise.exe launches, plays the intro logos & videos in a window, and then changes to fullscreen sits at a black screen doing nothing until the process is ended.

Patriots.exe complained that "mfc110.dll" was missing from my computer (it wasn't). Copied that into the game folder and then it still complains ("The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)").

tl:dr; The game still doesn't even launch. I recommend people save their money until this game is in a playable state, because it doesn't seem to be as I type this.
same thing hear

This is exactly what happens to me, as well (with the addition that the launcher will come up, but pushing "Play" does nothing).

My system:

Intel Core i7-2600K
8GB Ram
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64-bit
NVidia GTX 760, current drivers

Anticipating a fix soon, because this is just a ridiculous situation.

I've managed to fix this now, hopefully the same fix works for you and anyone else having the same problem:

Hrmm... I will try to find out why that is happening. I'm assuming you tried validating your Steam cache files for it before you tried the above?

Yes, tried all the usual steps, validate game cache, restart steam, restart PC, update graphics drivers / windows update, reinstall the game completely. Only installing the stuff in the _CommonRedist folder fixed it.
Bump. This worked for me. I thought my Radeon card was the problem but this seemed to have fixed it. THANK YOU!!!
Hey there, I've done everything this post has told me too, even after verifying my cache, checking for driver updates, reinstalling the game, and checking if my graphics card was supported. NOTHING WORKS.

I was able to play fine yesterday, so I'm assuming this has something to do with the patch.

Computer specs:

Windows 7 home premium SP1 64-bit
8 Gigs RAM
GTX 660TI
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4 GHz

EDIT: Works fine now, I don't know why but it does so whatever you guys did, thanks!

I have this same problem that you guys have. i have followed the steps all the way to installing the directx. now it says it's downloading it but it is unchanging and just says initializing.
This solution worked for me. Thank you so much!
This is not a solution, this has to be released through an update, configuring things yourself shoulnd't be necessary....
this solution doesn't work for me. I restart my pc, stem and all thing that i can restar, but nothing works.
What can I do now?
i believe they may have patched it because mine has begun to work
Unfortunately this only worked for one day. I went to go play today and back to the same issue, game loads intro movies but then goes to black screen with game cursor.

Does your video card have DirectX 10 or higher? that was my problem. I'm going to replace mine soon.
