Thank you so much, so many people posted and your post was the only post worthy being posted.
Alas no the best OS ever been released is Win 7
It was superb super quick and easy ,comparing to Win8 ,which I got involuntarily ofc
by buying laptop in 2013
Words do not describe how much this comment fails.
You refuse to buy Vista, 7, or 8, because apparently they're "XP with a different template", but buying 11 is not a problem?
Which crystal ball told you 11 won't be yet another "XP template"?
You're contradicting yourself.
I don't get it. Why did you buy a copy of XP to overwrite the free copy of 7/8 that came pre-installed on your PC?
Didn't you say you'd "switch, if it was free"?
I can think of only 3 reasons you'd get such a modern machine with a free copy of such an ancient OS.
1. This is your work PC.
You shouldn't be playing games on your work PC. Seriously, just don't.
2. Your copy of XP is not genuine.
In that case there's nothing anyone can do to help you. Pirates don't get any support.
3. You built your PC yourself and already had a copy of XP handy.
You should've bought 4 GB of RAM instead of 6. With the money you'd have saved, you might've been able to invest in a newer OS. It's not like XP x86 can access more than 4 GB RAM anyways, and I'd be surprised if you were one of the < 1% of PC users to own a copy of XP x86_64.
Not only for this game.
This right here.
Why would you turds come and post here if you are not willing to help?
And, I also want to make it run in my XP SP3, and it just won't. I tried that fix but it will just work in 64 bit, I'm afraid. But thanks for trying to help.
Why did you turds buy the game if it doesn't even support your OS?
What, should I make a thread called "Doesn't work on Ubuntu" and start whining and complaining about something that can easily changed by either upgrading my OS or my computer, just because I can't read a simple system requirement sheet?
If being able to read means being an Elitist, then I guess we are. Nothing wrong with paying attention at grade school, I say.
You want help? Here's an idea:
Install Virtualbox or VMWare Player, create a VM on which you install a supported OS, install RoN EE on the VM, pray that it'll work.
So, has the OP or anybody else with Windows XP tried this fix?
Did it work?
Thanks in advance!
The old version could be problematic on Windows 7 and 8 (more so the latter), hence this new version has been created to play on recent operating system, but I guess this has come at the expense of playability on XP.
Why not just code the game so that it plays on every operating system? In a word... money. The game producers most probably decided it would not be profitable to put even more work into the extended edition. I don't really know but I am guessing that it would be too technically challenging to make the game compatible with a wider range of operating systems, given their budget, hence they decided to draw a line and XP was on the wrong side of that line.
There is no point complaining about it. If you don't like it, don't buy the game.
I asked about XP on another game thread recently and got a torrent of trolls criticising me for asking about XP....just like on this thread. Unhelpful and ignorant kids basically...just like on this thread. Almost as ignorant and immature as the trolls who criticise people's grammar or spelling....as if American English is the only language people should speak.
Here's my 2 cents:
1. @Shpongle did not ask for help. He/she just opened a thread stating that this game (unsurprisingly) doesn't work with XP, saying that "it should, but doesn't".
Considering the store page explicitly states Windows 7 as bare minimum, he/she pretty much begged for being trolled.
Asking for help is one thing, complaining about lacking support for something that is explicitly not supported, however, is something else entirely.
2. Calling others "ignorant" when you're the one who didn't read the system requirement list, is a bit ironic, don't you think?
I'm not speaking for everyone in this thread, but when some of the people here say "you should update to Windows 7 at least", it's neither unhelpful nor ignorant nor childish. It's actually good advice. You really should update to Windows 7 or newer, not just for gaming. Windows XP is unsupported; even Microsoft no longer supports it.
As long as you keep playing your disk-based games on your XP machine, it's all good. But as soon as you browse the web (like you're doing right now), you shouldn't be surprised if your PC becomes completely unusable due to the masses of malware trying to attach your PC to some random botnet, in order to launch DDoS attacks or mine bitcoins, just because your computer no longer receives critical security updates.
Stop being so stubborn about it, you'll be doing yourself a favor in the long run.
Can not really recall atm how to fix it directly, since i do not have the problem myself.
But i tink you still can google it and check out the old replies; but in generic answers...
1) read all above in this thread; be nice and read and try old posted material first before asking for new posts... of course we can help you if you do not understand some of the steps/material
Besides the stuff posted in this thread above, also check this link:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/287450/discussions/1/35221031850802478/
2) In steam right click your game in the steam game library and select properties, select the tab "local files" then select the option "verify integrity of game cache..."
3) check if you have latest graphic drivers
4) check if you have latest directX your computer supports
If needed be, try installing an older directX version next to directX 11
That should not give you any problems
5) Install msxml4 (I do not know if it is still used now, but it gave a lot of problems in the past). Google it and you will find official microsoft website
6) disable or uninstall your virusscanner for a min and see if it passes (if you want you can use steam offline mode and unplug your internetcable)
7) disable the intro movie
depending on your windows version it could be located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations\rise2.ini
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations\rise2.ini
**the folders can be hidden, so if needed copy paste the adress without rise2.ini or unhide windows system files/folders**
Copy rise2.ini and rename it, if ever needed you can use this copy to restore it back to the "original" rise2.ini-file again.
Open rise2.ini with notepad for example and lookup "SkipIntroMovies=0" and set it to "SkipIntroMovies=1"
8) Use above methode to change the graphic settings to a different format screen 1024x768 if its not on that for example
Windowed Width=1024
Windowed Height=768
AND/OR
Fullscreen=1
AND/OR
Sound Enabled=0 (will disable sound, to be sure it has nothing to do with that)
9) Delete the game and reinstall it again
10) If i recall correctly... (hope this was not for/or only for stats in game)
Instead of Rise2.ini you can open Rise.ini, in it you can turn on the logfile for crashes (if they still work)
AllowLogs=1
In gamelog.ini you can see where the logfile will be saved.
IF any of the above steps fixed your problem, please report which (or on which step) your problem was fixed.
If not, hope we as community (or dev's from skybox lab's) can help you any further.
No, actually. I just wanted to say this game doesn't work on Win XP SP3 32bit. Which was a surprise to me because I played this very same exact game on Win XP 32bit retail. Back in 2003. Same graphics, same game, 12 years later, doesn't work on the same platform.
I have Age of Empires 2 HD edition, which works on Win XP SP3 32 bit, BUT It becomes quickly unplayable as soon as there's more than 200 units on the map. And it's not even HD. There's no difference in graphics. There's people saying that they have a completly new PC with 16gb ram, Windows 8 64bit and Nvidia Titan and the best computer ever, and yet the game starts to stutter after 200 units on their computer just the same as my trusty ol' mill. And it's been like that since release of AOE2HD. But the 1997 version works fine on everyones computer. No stutter regardless of how many units.
So you see, I kind of don't understand why a 80.000.000.000$ company like Microsoft makes a ''remastered'' game of Rise of Nations, which then doesn't work on the same platform that the original game worked on in 2003.Same graphics, same game, 12 years later, doesn't work on the same platform. Maybe they can't afford it? lol.
Or maybe MS just wanted to end support for an over 7 year-old OS in 2009, but decided to extend said support for a whopping 5 years, because some people felt entitled, and with the end of the extended support period in 2014, they decided not to waste any more money to support an OS that's already way past expiration date?
In case you didn't notice, MS still supports a number of very demanding products, such as Vista, 7, and 8.x. Not to mention Windows Phone 8.x and Xbox OS (for 360 and One). And that's just the tip of the iceberg. MS has plenty of software suites it needs to support, that the average consumer probably doesn't even know about, such as Visual Studio, SQL Server Management Studio, MS Office (actually, that one's pretty well known among average users), Office for Mac (less known, but it exists as well), etc.
They're also developing Windows 10, Visual Studio 2015, Office 2015/2016, the next Halo, the next Fable, etc.
In addition to all that, they now also have to support several devices, including the Xbox 360 and One, the Surface series, the Lumias (courtesy of Nokia), Kinect, etc.
Let's not forget that they still need to R&D new products, such as the next Surface, the next Xbox (did you know consoles aren't designed in just 7 days?), the next couple of Lumia phones, HoloLens, etc.
And then there's all the services MS offers, like Azure, OneDrive, Bing, and more.
Do you really think that 80.000.000.000$ company has nothing else to do than worry about the compatibility of one old game for an OS that's no longer supported?
For the record: You were lucky AoE 2 HD worked on XP. The game officially requires Vista to run. Your luck just ran out with RoN EE.
