It worth if you like games like Age of Empires.

The main single player has enough in it to be worth the purchase. And you can play AI on skirmish maps if thats your thing.

As someone who only plays single player I would say yes it's definitely worth it. The "Thrones and Patriots" Cold War campaign is a particular favourite.

I assume some time toward the end of the month.

The game has three types of Single Player: skirmish, scenarios and Conquer the World. Skirmishes are, in my opinion, not very interesting. RoN is a good RTS game, but I think AoE2 is better as a pure RTS. The scenarios are good, but not spectacular (except for the Cold War campaign which is truly unique... and difficult!).

The Conquer the World game is a ton of fun! You get a risk-like map with territories and armies; you move armies around to conquer new territories; territories can provide bonuses (eg. passive boosts in production), additional armies and "Tribute" which is a currency for many things. You can upgrade territories, which improves their defensive value (if attacked, you'll start with a more expansive base). You can buy Cards, which provide either one-use boosts during battles, or Map/strategic utility such as stealing territory, sabotaging defenses or World Wonder cards.

The combination of passive bonuses, World Wonders and card bonuses turns later games into much more high-pace battles, because both sides have a ton of passive benefits at their side. The only thing I regret is that the map size is pretty small and the game doesn't last long. I really wish this game had a "Marathon" setting like Civ5!
It is very much worth it for the single player. The Risk mode is the best mode in my opinion.

Yes, it is worth it for Single Player. For Skirmish, lots of options to tweak (you can also observe 8 AI contorlled players fight each other, also, if I remember correctly there was an option to record the skirmish and watch it, when you finished, later (though if you saved, the recording finished and when you load the save, it would do a new recording starting from when you loaded)). There were tutorial scenarios, from what I remember (not sure if there were stand alone scenarios, though, I think there was). And, of course, to save the best for last, Conquer The World (in which Dominic has explained), there are/was 5 Conquer The World (CTW) campaigns (RoN came with The Entire World CTW campaign and the expansion, Thrones and Patriots (TaP), included 4 smaller scale (but equally enjoyable) CTW campaigns: Alexander the Great, The New World, Napoleon and, last but certainly not least, The Cold War Campaigns. Also, RoN included, from what I remember, a Map/Scenario Editor and was easily and very moddable (using just Notepad, you could mod it, though I remember you could not mod in extra units and nations, just replace existing ones, I think, but I could be wrong). I Hope this helps :-) . I also hope that it is the latest version (RoN Gold edition update 1.04, code: v3.2.12.0800) that the Devs are re releasing in HD form (because you cannot download the 1.04 Gold Edition update manually and you cannot download the update in game, I think the server closed)

Speaking from someone who played this game religously WITHOUT internet AT ALL, then yes. There are a bunch of campaigns, a world map-conquer mode, and plenty of civilizations to master against the AI.

With an adition to steam it may not have single player only, I remember the old have a primitive matchmaking function except microsoft took down the servers when I started playing, but it should be possible to play both coop and vs.

HELL YES. This game has 5 campaigns and probably the best singleplayer skirmish I have ever seen in any rts. The amount of customizable options you have in skirmish is just unbelievable, you can play in many different game modes with customizable rules, starting and winning conditions, ages you want to play in, resource income and many others. Also, all of the maps are randomly generated, so every time you choose a map you basicaly only choose a set of rules for a random generator to create a map so you can play over and over again on the "same" map but it will always be different. Also, there are dozens of nations with unique bonuses to choose from and the AI is amazing. You can play on 6 different difficulty options and believe me, higher difficulties are very challenging. You can even set AI behaviour to more defensive or aggresive... Simpy said, unlike every single modern RTS, this game gives you so many options to customize your game that it will never get boring, even if you don't play against human oponents.
