Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

Has this replaced the original RON for anyone?
I have been playing RON solidly for nearly 10 years now and It is as addictive now as when it was first released. I was so pleased when it was released on Steam. I think the devs have done a brilliant job with the game, giving it a gentle polish without changing too much. It is also good that issues people are seeing are slowly being patched out.
Has anyone relinquished their grip on the original RON yet? For me, even though both versions are great, I haven't uninstalled the old one. There is something nostalgic about it and I still enjoy playing it after all these years, so my 2 RON shortcuts sit side by side in harmony on my desktop :)

No. This Extended Edition is worse in may way comparing to the old version.

The changes I don't like, and the changes I expected but don't appear in this extended edition:

1. The subtitle looks uglier.
The old beautiful subtitle of t&p expantion and gold edition:

2. I prefer the old blue animated main menu background to the new one.
The skill of the artist who paint the background illustrations is good, but it is boring that you just switch the pictures one by one.
Here is a better sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ehaaspft3Zo
Several stacked pictures are switch in different frequencies, and other effects let the viewer feel the pictures are moving.

And all the contents of the current pictures are about warriors and weapons. I think some cultural elements like great buildings, maps, artifacts... could be added.
Also I don't like the position of the menu be changed to the center of the screen.
I hope there is an option to switch the old mainmenu back.

3. Only T&P music are played in background while in main menu and lobby menu. Since this extended edition contains the full content of the vanilla and expasion, why not let all music be played in background?

4. I don't like the color of gameplay graphic. It is too saturated. I prefer the old color because RON is a historical game and low saturation of color fit the motif more.
There should be an option to switch the graphic back.

5. I can't feel the difference of the improved graphic except the smoother move of units. The improvement of graphic I expected the most just doesn't appear.

6. No improvement of the game control.
In original version, there is a little delay between serial commands. If you send commands with shift key too fast, some commands will be ignored.
Besides, sometimes the patriot unit will be unselect if you press home key.
I expect these control problem be fixed in extended edtion but they are not fixed.

7. No lobby.

8. New bugs that don't appear in the original version.

9. No new balance change of gameplay.

10. No improvement of multiplayer connection.

.........
.....

The only good change of the extention edition is the smoother unit animation.
I don't like many of the new changes, and what I expect just don't appear.
The most annoying thing is the NEW BUGS....Did you really do tests before releasing..? :S

Overall this edition is worse than the old one but I have to accept, because the old gamespy server has already been shut down......

This, and I literally bought original RoN about a year ago for $8.

There is one single condition where the old RON was preferable, and that's when I've made deep modifications to the game files (such as creating entirely new unit graphics in the .tga files). These cannot be modded in the {/Rise of Nations/mods} directory, and instead must be modded in the actual game root files themselves.

The Steam version periodically checks the cloud and the native copies of the files. If there's any discrepancy, it will not run at all unless I choose which version to override. If my cloud version gets modded, that's fine... until I try to multiplay against my friends. Then my copy of RON will start crashing repeatedly unless I reinstall all files back to pristine.

In all other respects, the Steam version is as good as, or better than, the disc version - but the integrity check built into the Steam version means my own deep mods don't survive very long before being overwritten.
