Sorry for my english...
They put you on a map of the world or a continent with a certain historical (e.g. Alexander the Great's conquests, Napoleon, Cold War, etc) or random theme and give you some overall victory conditions you need to fulfill, historical or otherwise but it's up to you how you achieve that, what territory you attack, who you ally with, how you expand, etc.
I noticed you're playing Dawn of War Dark Crusade right now - RoN's campaigns are pretty similar to DC's territorial conquest mode so if you enjoy that, you'll probably like RoN too.
Some campaigns have scripted battles, tailored to the historical conflicts of the time and place (e.g. Vietnam or the Korean War in the Cold War campaign), but there are also random campaigns like the Entire World where you start with 1 territory and must conquer the world without any historical or scripted events.
The territories you conquer typically give you bonus resource flow, armies, action cards or a strategic currency that you can use to enhance your defenses, perform diplomacy or give yourself an edge in upcoming battles.
Conclusion and TLDR:
Personally, I find RoN's freeform territorial conquest campaigns a lot more engaging and replayable than most of the scripted mission sequences of other games. Already spent 117 hours playing mostly the random Entire World campaign (finished it about 4-5 times by now) and a few turns of the Cold War campaign and I'm still having fun while I get bored of the standard campaign formula of other games in typically less than 15-20 hours, rarely finishing most of them in one go (if ever).
Your mileage may vary of course. If you don't like campaigns without a strong story and a highly scripted direction, you may be disappointed, but if you think you could also enjoy a less scripted experience with more interactivity and freedom, you're going to love RoN.
