I don't know why they went the direction they did of Artyom seeming to be a runt and undeserving of being a ranger, it is frustrating.
I'm only a little bit into Exodus and yes, Miller at the least treats you like ♥♥♥♥, but at least a few others you'll meet recognise Artyom as a hero. Anna starts off as condescending and you once again have to be taught how to use a gas mask and all the stuff Artyom is one of the most experienced t, but that's simply gameplay for those who haven't played the others. Thankfully she does warm up compared to Last light and isn't such a ♥♥♥♥.
Once you pass the tutorial missions and the world opens up, it seems to become much more fun.
When you read the books, there's a lot of philosophy about the Dark ones which they paraphrased in the games, a lot of debate as to whether we misunderstood them or they are evil and if evil even exists and such. There's a few characters missing from the books and Artyom actually goes through some much worse situations in the book of 2033, so if you're interested in the things that are missed in the game or over shadowed, I really recommend reading the book or getting an audiobook of it. Metro 2034 doesn't follow Artyom as the main character, but it's a good look into other areas of the metro. 2035 I hated, but it would be a big spoiler to explain why.
Now, it may be on purpose so that you don't get too sure of you because Artyom is young and because Miller cares about him and that he wants him to stay focused on his missions (Melnik has a tough personality like Anna because he probably considers Artyom as his son whom he never had)
This conclusion comes from the end of Metro Exodus where they open up more to Artyom. At the beginning of Exodus, he is salty towards him but because he is kept on a leash by the high ranking officers therefore, that explains why he is so hard on Artyom.
Personally, I would advise you to continue keeping in mind that they appreciate you but in a particular way. In any case, if you want to do the Exodus, which is clearly advised to follow the story (specially for dlc's), you have to at least finish Last Light or watch it.
Now, for me, Metro 2033 will always be superior to other Metro
What i think about the games compared to the books? I think Dmitry Glukhovsky had a big impact on how the first game was shaped in terms of characters. It seems like it wasn't the thing in Last Light and i'm not sure if the developers did it because they didn't care much or if Deep Silver as the publisher made them to do it, but the finished characters seems to be really shallow (Pavel on the other hand really stands out).
Nevertheless, it's a great series i just whish they would be more like the original, which was more authentic when it comes to the books even though they really just scratched the surface of it. There's so much more potential.
I finished Metro 2033 Redux in VR using VorpX and now i'm playing through Last Light Redux. Both in Geometry 3D mode. It's absolutely amazing. It ads so much to the immersion. And i'm playing it on a i5 6600, 16GB RAM and GTX1060 6GB. Framerates mostly around 50 with lowest settings. But it looks really good (exteriors are a bit blurry and hard on framerates but with better hardware you should be able to crank the settings up).
I really recommend VorpX also for other games. It's 36 EUR but it's worth every cent. I don't even play native VR games anymore. And if i can't run a game in FullVR G3D mode i just switch to Immersive screen with Z3D or Cinema mode. Every time i try to launch a game on my 24" inch flat panel .. i just go back to VorpX immediately :)
Anna's behaviour is irritating but she's got a chip on her shoulder and needs to prove herself worthy to daddy so, there's that. Miller is obviously biased.
But the rest of the rangers treat you with the utmost respect.
To me, Artyom is a lovable idiot. He gets by on hard work and sheer luck. He is gullible to boot and always wants to see the best in people which makes him difficult to take seriously as a ranger in the eyes of the more jaded characters (Anna/Miller), although he's earned it.
Take Ulman for example. Ulman treats Artyom with all the due respect but still looks out for him like he's a kid (which he is... come on, 24, who wouldn't?). When Khan jumps you in your bunk after you've had a nightmare, Ulman overs at the door like a mother hen.
That's not because they disrespect you... that because you've been through a lot and you're young.
But yeah, I kind of get it. You expected the hero treatment.
Personally, I would have hated for everyone in the Metro to treat me like I spewed lavender out of my bum just because I somehow stumbled my way through the land and ended up blowing up some unknown quantity in their own nest (with a full team of ranger at my back pretty much half of the way :D)
That being said LL also had one of the more enjoyable bits and I would have played a whole game based around it, the extra level (built in DLC for most of the newer copies of LL) Kshatriya - Semi randomly generated survival/scavenging ? Was like STALKER on crack.
2. Thinking back, I agree, that Miller isn´t respectful to Artyom, but he really should.
3. Play the game further. I don´t want to spoiler you about Anna, but let´s say, she will be a bit more understandable.
4. I don´t know if you mean Metro 2033 or the Redux version, but in the non-Redux version, the stealth was just trashy honestly. But I don´t know how it is in Redux, because the original was for free at the end of the last month and I wasn´t sure if I would like Metro and possibly waste my money.
And I think, that the moral system is as clear as the one in Metro 2033. You only have to search up a guide and then you will get the other ending.
And just a small addition according to the books .. 2033>2034>2035. I was enjoying every bit of 2033 and when i played the original Metro 2033 i was in awe. 2034 started to be little boring sometimes and i'm glad it was shorter. Now i'm reading 2035 and i found myself skipping pages just because how boring and uninteresting some of the parts are. But this is only my honest opinion about them.
