Does anyone else feel really disappointed by this compared to 2033?
Went into 2033 blind, couldnt put it down and beat it in 2 days. Immediately bought last light and was met with disappointment.

During 2033 i always felt like i was learning about the world, i felt like i started off as a untrained youth and as i learned from Bourbon, Khan, Pavel, Miller, etc... I learned about the reds and the nazis, how both were pretty ♥♥♥♥. As the game went on i felt like i grew more experienced, by the end when i was with the rangers i felt like an actual member of their team and like i had earned my place there. When just Miller and I made it to the top of the tower and i had to leave him i felt like he trusted me enough to believe that i could complete the mission. I cant really recall a moment where a character was a ♥♥♥♥ to me, they all had their differing perspectives on things sure, but they all helped me learn about the world and taught me what they knew.

So going into Last Light i was expecting to be a ranger, be trusted and respected for nearly dying several times to stop the "threat" of the dark ones, maybe to learn that they werent actually evil, or maybe work to prevent the reds or the nazis from taking over the neutral stations. Instead i got treated to being talked down to by almost everyone, including the characters i loved in the last game, and being treated to the same "Escape here, run around scavenging the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ weapons while running around through the same ideas as the first game"

Miller is kind of a ♥♥♥♥, telling me about how his le totally original female sniper daughter will kill me if i let the dark one get into my mind. I dunno maybe a "Hey Artyom, i know the dark ones left a scar on you from your last engagment with them, be careful and dont let them get into your mind". I legitmately think Artyom got treated with more respect from Miller and the Rangers as an unknown random in the first game than he does as a respected and hard fought ranger. The diary even says "I need to prove myself if i want to be respected" like what the ♥♥♥♥ no i dont i already did that.

Dont even get me started on Anna, she acts like a ♥♥♥♥♥ to me despite all of my achievments in the last game. With such genius lines as "I wish i was in the tower myself, watching the missles fall and them burn in their nests", like yeah except you were nowhere to be found while your Dad and i nearly died climbing the tower, with him having been mauled, nearly killed and needing to be left behind. She clearly was old enough to have helped, yet where were her and the rest of these people we see? I thought the rangers were like a platoon sized group at most. There are so many rangers we see in this game that would have been sent to help at the tower, yet they werent.

I dont want to turn this into too long of a rant, i just was really disappointed by the story changes and the changes to the atmosphere in generally, it feels way less bleak and way more interconnected and "Fallouty" i guess compared to 2033. The mechanics are great though, the stealth is way too easy compared to 2033, but i like most of the changes, and i really like Pavel too, one of the most intresting characters of the game. I dont hate this game really, i was just suprised that so many call this game amazing and as good as 2033 when it really isnt.

Is metro exodus any good? Ive heard Anna is way better and an actual character in exodus, but i dont want to spend 40 dollars on something i might not even like, and does it get better? Im at the church section now, just after the church is raided. I dont really find the urge to go on.

You're right that the beginning of the game you're treated like ♥♥♥♥, even though you are literally THE hero of the metro, Miller respected you in 2033 the moment you show him Hunters tags, and recognises the difficult journey you've had from exhibition station to Polis.

I don't know why they went the direction they did of Artyom seeming to be a runt and undeserving of being a ranger, it is frustrating.

I'm only a little bit into Exodus and yes, Miller at the least treats you like ♥♥♥♥, but at least a few others you'll meet recognise Artyom as a hero. Anna starts off as condescending and you once again have to be taught how to use a gas mask and all the stuff Artyom is one of the most experienced t, but that's simply gameplay for those who haven't played the others. Thankfully she does warm up compared to Last light and isn't such a ♥♥♥♥.
Once you pass the tutorial missions and the world opens up, it seems to become much more fun.

When you read the books, there's a lot of philosophy about the Dark ones which they paraphrased in the games, a lot of debate as to whether we misunderstood them or they are evil and if evil even exists and such. There's a few characters missing from the books and Artyom actually goes through some much worse situations in the book of 2033, so if you're interested in the things that are missed in the game or over shadowed, I really recommend reading the book or getting an audiobook of it. Metro 2034 doesn't follow Artyom as the main character, but it's a good look into other areas of the metro. 2035 I hated, but it would be a big spoiler to explain why.
I confirm, they still treat you like a new Ranger.

Now, it may be on purpose so that you don't get too sure of you because Artyom is young and because Miller cares about him and that he wants him to stay focused on his missions (Melnik has a tough personality like Anna because he probably considers Artyom as his son whom he never had)

This conclusion comes from the end of Metro Exodus where they open up more to Artyom. At the beginning of Exodus, he is salty towards him but because he is kept on a leash by the high ranking officers therefore, that explains why he is so hard on Artyom.

Personally, I would advise you to continue keeping in mind that they appreciate you but in a particular way. In any case, if you want to do the Exodus, which is clearly advised to follow the story (specially for dlc's), you have to at least finish Last Light or watch it.

Now, for me, Metro 2033 will always be superior to other Metro

I liked it way more than 2033. Well except stupid idea with two endings and very very unclear karma system

@Viesna, i feel you. I played the original 2 games years ago, i also read the books. Now i'm replaying Redux and am at the same point as you (raided church and a little bit after that). First thing that got into my mind at the start was "How can Miller act like that after all he went through with Artyom in Metro 2033? And why the hell wants he the last Dark one to be killed? I just can't imagine Artyom didn't explained to everyone what he saw and how big of a mistake was the official end of Metro 2033". Anna? I honestly can't stand that character. One of the most annoying characters i came across in a game. After the church was raided i thought again "What the hell? Artyom got 2 main things to say to the Rangers once he gets to the church. Nobody cares that the Reds were goiing to attack it soon? Really?"

What i think about the games compared to the books? I think Dmitry Glukhovsky had a big impact on how the first game was shaped in terms of characters. It seems like it wasn't the thing in Last Light and i'm not sure if the developers did it because they didn't care much or if Deep Silver as the publisher made them to do it, but the finished characters seems to be really shallow (Pavel on the other hand really stands out).

Nevertheless, it's a great series i just whish they would be more like the original, which was more authentic when it comes to the books even though they really just scratched the surface of it. There's so much more potential.

I finished Metro 2033 Redux in VR using VorpX and now i'm playing through Last Light Redux. Both in Geometry 3D mode. It's absolutely amazing. It ads so much to the immersion. And i'm playing it on a i5 6600, 16GB RAM and GTX1060 6GB. Framerates mostly around 50 with lowest settings. But it looks really good (exteriors are a bit blurry and hard on framerates but with better hardware you should be able to crank the settings up).

I really recommend VorpX also for other games. It's 36 EUR but it's worth every cent. I don't even play native VR games anymore. And if i can't run a game in FullVR G3D mode i just switch to Immersive screen with Z3D or Cinema mode. Every time i try to launch a game on my 24" inch flat panel .. i just go back to VorpX immediately :)

In my honest opinion, it's fair. You ARE a new recruit. You didn't completely prove yourself. You were just in the right place at the right time. You're a hero of circumstances. You were gifted with the ability to communicate with the Dark Ones and that gave you an edge but you are, by all means, a noob.

Anna's behaviour is irritating but she's got a chip on her shoulder and needs to prove herself worthy to daddy so, there's that. Miller is obviously biased.

But the rest of the rangers treat you with the utmost respect.

To me, Artyom is a lovable idiot. He gets by on hard work and sheer luck. He is gullible to boot and always wants to see the best in people which makes him difficult to take seriously as a ranger in the eyes of the more jaded characters (Anna/Miller), although he's earned it.

Take Ulman for example. Ulman treats Artyom with all the due respect but still looks out for him like he's a kid (which he is... come on, 24, who wouldn't?). When Khan jumps you in your bunk after you've had a nightmare, Ulman overs at the door like a mother hen.

That's not because they disrespect you... that because you've been through a lot and you're young.

But yeah, I kind of get it. You expected the hero treatment.

Personally, I would have hated for everyone in the Metro to treat me like I spewed lavender out of my bum just because I somehow stumbled my way through the land and ended up blowing up some unknown quantity in their own nest (with a full team of ranger at my back pretty much half of the way :D)

Well .. i just finished LL and let me tell you .. the first game thought me, that even if i try to don't kill much and stealthy taking out only the needed number of enemies, i'm not playing canonical. So once i've came to the levels in LL where the Reds, Bandits and all of this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ guys were moving around i just killed them stealthy or violently after i was revealed. Now i got the bad ending, which is again not canonical as i learned ... i mean .. comon ... you made me play the 2nd game in that way because i thought "what the hell does it matter if i kill or not, when the next game will be following a preset path?" ... well let's go to Exodus then :/

I didn't mind most of LL, except the beginning absolutely ignoring your choice in the previous game, I always spared the dark ones so it was like *SMACK* thats not how we wanted you to play! THIS is how it went down.

That being said LL also had one of the more enjoyable bits and I would have played a whole game based around it, the extra level (built in DLC for most of the newer copies of LL) Kshatriya - Semi randomly generated survival/scavenging ? Was like STALKER on crack.

1. The Polis didn´t gave a ♥♥♥♥ on the Dark ones. And the other rangers where probably on some missions, because of the Nazis and the Reds.
2. Thinking back, I agree, that Miller isn´t respectful to Artyom, but he really should.
3. Play the game further. I don´t want to spoiler you about Anna, but let´s say, she will be a bit more understandable.
4. I don´t know if you mean Metro 2033 or the Redux version, but in the non-Redux version, the stealth was just trashy honestly. But I don´t know how it is in Redux, because the original was for free at the end of the last month and I wasn´t sure if I would like Metro and possibly waste my money.
And I think, that the moral system is as clear as the one in Metro 2033. You only have to search up a guide and then you will get the other ending.
I prefer Metro 2033 over Last Light and the OG 2033 over the redux 2033. Last Light didn't really click for me or half of Exodus. Still it got me finally picking up all the Metro books new. Curious to see how the books and game world diverge. No spoilers for the books please lol.

Without any spoilers i can tell you that Metro 2033 is the only one that somehow resembles and follows the events of the book. Last Light only scratched the surface of 2034. I'm in the middle of 2035 and didn't played Exodus yet but from what i saw from the trailers and read so far, the game is nothing like the book. Yes the lore is there, but so far, Artyom is still surviving inside the Metro.

And just a small addition according to the books .. 2033>2034>2035. I was enjoying every bit of 2033 and when i played the original Metro 2033 i was in awe. 2034 started to be little boring sometimes and i'm glad it was shorter. Now i'm reading 2035 and i found myself skipping pages just because how boring and uninteresting some of the parts are. But this is only my honest opinion about them.

Last Light was somewhat disappointing, but I find the DLC to be outstanding, more than making up for the issues I have with the game.
