is it linear?
people often mention this game when talking about stalker series but isn't it just a linear fps with minor rpg elements? I mean afaik there's no places just to explore, etc. am I wrong?

Too bad, an open-world design would've ruined the game actually.

It plays like Half Life.

I see you have over 100 hours in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and 50 hours in Fallout New Vegas. You seem to enjoy apocalyptic, story-centered games. Metro would fit perfectly with your tastes, aside from the linearity. Even considering that it is not open world, I have replayed each game dozens of times and at the price point they're at, they bring an amazing value. Go for it!

the thing is I don't follow main quest lines much
most of time I've spent on fnv and stalker is goofing around farming stuff, discovering new places and looking for loot

i'm a fan open-world games and Fallout NV, but never played stalker series. I enjoyed this game so much(and metro 2033). Yes, it is linear, dont expect this game has the same feeling like Fallout NV, it's like more story-driven and FPS (the FPS aspect is far more superior than RPG-shooter like Fallout), sure you can roaming around just a litle bit if you wanna search for loot and collectibles, but keep in mind that stuff you're looting(weapons) sometimes you can't keep it forever especially if you wanna switch weapons, because you can only bring 3 weapons at the same time, not like Fallout where you can have a lot of weapons. This game is definitely worth to try.

Pretty disgusting that you haven't even beat STALKER, its even more disgusting if you're playing with mods to enable free roam.

what makes you think that I didn't beat stalker? I finished original soc back in 2007 when I didn't care about bugs and it was a complete mess. best way to play stalker is just walk around collecting artifacts and completing optional quests until you get bored or walk into gamebreaking bug

Do you suffer from Aspergers my friend?

Just curious as I know a guy who refuses to play good games for seemingly small grevences and he has the same thing.

The game is not an open world but it does have open areas and places to explore, it plays a lot like half life.

Try not to let your pre-concieved notions influence you, Metro is probally the best survivial fps on steam right now.

Not every game has to have free roam or have like 10 paths to walk through to be good... some people man.

It is very linear except for the very big swamp map. Still, if you we're fascinated by stalker atmosphere and state of the art stage/level quality, you'll find that here.

Trying it can't be a bad idea when you get burnt out of open world games and their usual troubles (like unfocused combat gameplay).
