What CAN I kill?
For the entirety of the game I have not killed anyone or anything - except that one spiderbug that attacks Pavel. I have knocked out every person who stood in my way and just waited for the spiderbugs to eventually kill themselves by taking damage from the headlamp.

I've now just gotten past meeting Andrew the Blacksmith, and my trigger finger is really starting to itch with all the spiderbugs.

So can I kill mutants to my heart's content and still get the good ending?

I'm starting to wonder why I even scavenge for ammo when I've constantly have near full supply at all times. I've used my guns almost entirely to shoot at lights that must go out.

Loool clearly you haven't played 1st Metro. To get the good ending you don't have to kill anyone-you need to understand the metro and it's nature, people, things. To do that you need to listen to conversations, don't kill people who have surenderred, check every corner for stashes and save people and animals if you can.
For instance:
You have level called Friend... Or something like that. It's the level where you are saving Pavel from hanging. You can kill everyone but if you will leave those guys who surrender, listen to nazis talking, collect a stash in vent-you get more moral points.

You need to kill nosalises, spiders, and people. BUT if you have choice which will be later on like...save someone or let him die. THIS is important choice which will give you the most moral points. You get it?

I have played the first Metro, both versions of it completely through.

I was just curious because I've read some paranoid comments and guides that say whenever you kill you get bad karma. So I've been trying to avoid doing that.

I've also been exploring and evesdropping, because it makes the game more enjoyable for me. I like taking my time and enjoying games for what they are rather than bum rushing through them.

I just wanted to know if I can kill mutants to my heart's content without affecting my pretty good karma point score (I've been keeping tally, I have 46 so far).

No, you will lose moral points for killing mutants at some location in the chapters. Good thing you are counting the score, but remember some moral points weigh more than the others. Also you do something good you get +1 point but if you something bad at same location, you do not always net -1 moral point, it can be greater and vice versa.

There is no such thing as"get that amount of points to get good ending". I will tell you how i got good. I was not killing nazis or reds if they gave up, if i could i was listening to conversations. There are like 3 important choices:Save Pavel, Take off your mask when Lesnicky demands it, and save that thing from dying before a Pavel fight.. I don't remember what it was. Do this and you have good ending. What problem is with that? It's more easy than in 1st game. In 1st game there was less moral choices...

Just finihed it on R/H - just played it as I saw it. Didn't kill surrendees, saved Pavel and the bear.. Incapacitated the majority of enemies but did kill some before I realised I had a pair of knuckledusters. Killed a lot of Pavel's men and a load in the defense of D6. Didn't free the prisoners in the Nazi camp because I didn't notice the lever. I did get a lapdance.

In my ending there is a family, Anna I assume with Arytom's son. The dark ones leaving for somewhere new. Is that the good ending? edit : So it appears that isn't the good ending. Also looks like you need at least two playthroughs for all achievements so I'll need to play again on Spartan.

Thats what i used to think when i started to test out the moral points tally. But no, i did what you did(the 3 important choices including saving Lesnitsky and doing everything else in negativity) and it presented me the C'est la Vie ending. Then doing everything opposite it still gave me C'est la Vie ending. Mix up everything -- Redemption/C'est la Vie ending. Do almost everything in order -- Redemption ending. So i still think there is a tally for moral points to reach the ending. You did what you wanted to do in that situation while in the game(i assume without referring to guide for the first time) and got the Redemption one! Good for you!

You guys are still debating what's what when there are complete guides concerning the moral point system available already for years?

Can I kill mutants to my heart's content and not have my moral poitns affected by it?

[ ] Yes
[ ] No

I don't know how this has gotten so hard to answer.

Just take a look at the link in the first reply. You'll have an answer for every corner of the game.

It doesn't mention anything about mutants, hence my concerns. Guess that means I can murder the wildlife to my heart's content?

It is hard to answer, because not always. Most of the time, yes, but during some scripted sequences you can lose a point for attacking them. Like someone said previously - read the effing guide. Of course, it contains spoilers.

You should be avoiding contact anyway. Play a different game if you want non stop action.

Killing in most cases will in many cases incur negative karma, but most of the ones that hit you really hard are ones that require you show mercy:

Don't shoot enemies that surrender

The bear in the garden? Knock the nosalises off it, help it live

Stealth will be your friend in the rest of the game.

Mutants/monsters that openly attack you are, more or less, fair game, if you can reasonably avoid the creature/person, don't light 'm up, but for boss fights? hit them like they owe you money.
