Question about symbol in upper left corner

I know that the auto game save is represented by the cd/dvd disc in the bottom left but on occasion there is a stylized exclamation point ! in the upper left. It's not part of the journal notes but other than meaning I am moving onto another area I don't understand it's meaning. I must of missed seeing the explanation when I started the game but now I can't find any information on it.

Screenshot? Is it a lightning bolt? Battery dead?

it's a bold outlined rectangle with a bold block print exclamation point. It happens sometimes at the same time as a save but not always. Paying more attention to it, it seems to occur when a story point is being made but I don't know if it has a keyboard/controller function associated with it. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=917721160

I'm pretty sure you get that when your objectives journal gets updated, the one you can bring up in your right hand. The icon does bear a resemblance to it, it even has the lil' compass circle
