Oculus Rift support arrives for Toybox Turbos
Hey everyone!

Virtual reality is something we’ve been getting quietly giddy about at Codemasters for a while now. Aside from the fact that we count a lot of very geeky gamers amongst ourselves – the kind of people who would (and did!) spend their own money on Oculus Kickstarter kits – we’re also excited about seeing more and more people beginning to explore what can be done with this type of technology.

With this in mind it's great to be able to tell you that Toybox Turbos now has Oculus Rift support!

To find out more, head on over to the blog[blog.codemasters.com].

How to Enable VR
  • Right-click Toybox Turbos in your Steam library, and select Properties.
  • In the General tab, click Set Launch Options.
  • In the text field, type –vr
  • Close the Properties window and run the game normally.
  • The Virtual Reality should now be active.
  • If it is not, from the main menu of Toybox Turbos go to Options -> Settings -> Video Settings and choose Oculus Rift: On

Please note that at any point in the game, you can press F12 or click in the right stick of your gamepad (R3) to centre the 3D scene while playing with the Oculus Rift.

Please also note that Oculus Rift support is not included within the demo of Toybox Turbos, and is only available in the full game.

Finally got to play this in the DK2 after being out of town last week :) It's fantastic, I notice so many details in the levels I never saw before, and that is after having completed the entire single player mode.

Both me and a friend thinks the original camera is too close, and the follow camera just makes me disoriented (but not sick), what we do is just lean in while loading and then lean back when in the game, or do the same and reset while leaning in. Sure things become a lot smaller and you will have to lean in to see your vehicle behind obstacles in some levels, but it makes for a much more comfortable experience.

The second thing with that is of course... it's super tactical to be able to see the entire level, and personally this feels like the way the game should be played. It becomes a much more comfortable experience and relies more on driving skills than memorizing the levels. The shortcuts are possible to spot in advance, but my friend (who I just gifted the game) missed the shortcuts anyway so you still have to be aware of them :)

So yeah, brilliant mode, me I could run it in direct mode, no issues except a bit of frame-rate drop in some levels, even on a GTX970, but most of the time it runs super nicely. My friend who does have a 780ti got judder constantly in direct mode but he ran it fine in extended instead, which is something I have issues with playing other titles... Oculus SDK sure acts differently depending on the system.

Over the holidays I will put everyone I know into this game :) Perhaps do it in sequence, play it on a screen, then in VR. It'll be fun to watch :D Oh, and mirroring in direct mode works no issues, only problem is that the Steam overlay only works in 2D so it only shows up on the mirror, but that is better than not showing up anywhere for sure!

Does it work in direct to rift mode or only extended mode ??

It has built in direct to rift mode, but it crashes for me, also found several threads mentioning that. As far as I've heard, there's no issues with extended mode

Thanks for the reply ZombieBear and the info.

As far as extended mode is concerned , thats a mode I cant use sadly. I use it on a fairly decent gaming laptop which runs stuff fine in direct mode. In extended mode though , the laptop does not let me rotate the oculus to the correct orientation :(

I'd like to be able to play just standing still, as if I was playing scalextric. Following the car around gets a bit queezy for me. I realise right now that might not work well with the DK2 resolution but in the future..... Love it though, in small doses.

Will this be updated to work with Windows 10 and SDK 0.7? I can't play this game since updating.

I just bought the game today when I saw it had VR support but I am also unable to play it because I am on Windows 10 with SDK 0.7. An update would be great!

Thanks!

I'd love to hear that there are plans to update the game -at least- for a support of the oculus vr sdk 1.0 whem its done. Please devs give us an answer on this and spend the "sale buyers" like me that blindly fell (again) for the "VR support" tag some hope by saying that your game will actually support the latest technology of HMDs again at some point.

I just commented in the Meltdown thread about this as well :p SDK 1.0 support should be more important, as you say. It would indeed be nice to know the developer's intentions here.

While 1.0 might not be compatible with DK2 (who knows?), there is still the option to downgrade the Oculus runtime at this moment, so you can play this title in VR. If you want to play games not updated to 0.7, just run 0.6 or even 0.5. Easy! :o

runs perfectly on driver 0.4.4

Does it work with SDK 0.7?
