Assaulting a bunker, rocks, a hill, anything!
How do you attack anything in this game? A single platoon of riflemen in a bunker are damn near unkillable! I am stuck on the sand storm mission. On the "fortified hill" capture point there is a group of german infantry in a bunker. I can plunk away at them for days with the "suppression" action of my tanks, but they never seem to actually get suppressed. My infantry dismounts from trucks and gets slaughtered. They creep up behind tanks and get slaughtered. There just doesn't seem to be a way to clear a bunker, a building, or any other piece of cover that doesn't involve massive casualties for infantry.

And the reaction fire in this game is so ridiculously over-powered that even approaching a position is suicide. I feel like I am missing something vital because I am just not getting it.

You can suppress units in bunkers (though they will never run away when in a bunker). Units do not block each other (the scale makes no sense for them to do so).

You are making the right moves, but solidly dug in troops are very hard to remove - see D-Day. You are correct that walking infantry up to waiting troops will be (and was) very expensive!

With smaller guns (e.g. the early war Allied tanks) it can take a while to suppress defended troops. Remember to use any off-map assets too.

Cheers

Start suppressive fire with your longest range units first, then second-longest range, etc. Sometimes you can draw reactive fire from far enough away that you don't receive too much damage. Use a unit or two to draw enemy fire before charging with your assault unit (preferably engineers).

Alternatively, you can just use artillery (if the mission allows you access to any) to either suppress or even route the enemy. In the end though, you'll probably use tanks or support infantry to suppress the enemy while your primary infantry deals with the enemy. Reaction fire is usually far more risky when using tanks to finish off something like a Tiger I or similar. So long as the enemy has above 0 morale, they will still fire back. Get their moral below zero and they should surrender or eventually route or bail out.

Thank you all for the advice. I think I've got it figured out. I just think I was in too much of a hurry and didn't give enough time for suppressing. Also, I didn't understand the morale effects. I feel that could have been explained better.

there is no balance in this game pretty one sided and they are using cheats.

There's a definite learning curve to this game, but most of it seems to make sense more or less.I'm still learning at 22 hours played or so, but I'm no longer blindly advancing my troops forward. Once you start to get a bit of an idea of what's going on, then it starts getting fun. Really enjoying this game so far...reminds me of Advance Wars, but way more strategy and complexity involved.
