I don't know what caused it either but yes this game does have soft locks.
Same with flags.
That's not spoilers, this should be common info - when you get to backstage. Basically - see black and white mask? Make sure you have both flags and planks.
Otherwise it's helter skelter (don't forget to press space), thankfully there isn't any story-related between boiler and next lodge level.
I've killed the meatplant guy very early on and collected the one piece of meat. Didn't think much of it back then so I gave it to Pottsdam and now I'm on the fabric part to get into the lodge and I can't get any more meat for the barking fire station dog. Tried several times to steal the fabric quickly but it's scripted so that the dog always alerts the sheriff when you place the ladder. Can I obtain any more meat or get rid of the dog in some way?
So a little lesson for future players: Take care of your scrumptious, red, precious meat.
I think you're meant to get the slip from your father first, which then the meat plant guy gives you a scripted piece. I think the one you collect from killing him is an extra? I haven't played this game since new years so idk.
That's true, so if I understand this correctly, you can get two pieces of meat at max (at least in this stage, I haven't finished the game yet) but if you F up the order and kill the guy before visiting your father, you can have a maximum of one piece of meat (plus a useless signed slip) and if you give it away like I did, the story from this point on should be unfinishable, right?
It seems that way. These old games weren't thoroughly planned or 100% tested when it comes to looking at all angles of their sequences. Not to mention, sometimes one can be so clueless they believe they broke the game on accident. when in reality, they just forgot a particular sequence. Not the players fault, just confusing design sometimes.
At one point my wife and I needed a walkthrough, because some of these puzzles aren't logical, just cryptic.
