I'm new to this game, and don't know what to do
Are there any tips as to what I should keep an eye out for?

The game kind of leads you to your devices and let's you explore the town of Harvest....

When it puts you on leash (which it does early on) things do get self-explanatory

But the first day you're on your own

You'll want to get a Lodge Application, but there aren't any at the post office
So check the ruins of the Newspaper Building for proof the Postmaster was there, though it'll be useless without the Sherrif's Checkbook... though you'll need a Girly Mag for Loomis to get to it.

Grab a newspaper and give it to Jimmy each day or he'll attack. He's hard to fight without a strong enough weapon.

Other things to note

You can kill almost any NPC in the game, each NPC has an "Alarm Chance", the chance which killing them will lead to an arrest

Get arrested three times, you're dead

Get arrested for killing a Story Essential (100% failure chance) NPC, automatic death

Your Mom, Mr. Pottsdam, Mrs. Pottsdam, Stephanie, The Firemen, Edna's Daughter, Pastorelli, Mr. Johnson, and Edna are all plot essential NPCs

Buster Monroe counts as Plot Essential, despite having nothing to do with the story

The Sherrif is Invulnerable and cannot be harmed to begin with

The Mortician and Wasp Woman have a 0% failure rate, so kill them if you please

You will never need to go the Military Installation or the Wasp Woman's House to complete the game, talking to Colonel Buster Monroe is a trap and eventually kills you

You can get two Get Out Of Jail Free Cards, one from the TV Station from killing the Donald Trump lookalike McKnight and stealing the TV Station Deed and one from the Sherrif's Check Book... make copies of each in the General Store then show them to the sherrif to get teh cards. They'll allow you to kill any non-plot essential NPC to skip puzzles

Each character has special commands that must be typed to get special dialogue from, though none of them are plot essential. the ones I've found are saying "Lodge" to Edna, or saying "Dominatrix" or "♥♥♥♥" to Mom

Hope this helps
