There is no Headquarter as it was at X3 universe nor possibility for reverse engineering. You can only use mods for player shipyards which produce pre-installed set of ships and don't have full access for their own supplies. Like you'll never be able set price to buy drone at your shipyard nor limit it to zero at all. You'll be buying that drones regardless of your will (there is some nuances, but overall that is true).
You will never be able to switch Skunk to something worth (some reskins are available through the mods. And even changing Skunk to capital ship but that is about mods too... very... very outdated mod. I'm pretty sure it doesn't even work). You're stucked inside Skunk forever. All impovements wont make you a good enough vs wings of fighters (cuz of lack of turrets and strong guns with reasonable overheat) and same for big ships (cuz of low firepower). Missiles except Astrobee and Nova are total trash for any use, no anti-capital missiles. As previously said there is some nuances, but you can forget about "One man army" with "Hyperion" like it was at X3 universe.
I can proceed with the list of preplexing decisions of game designers, but... Though I consider not adding player Headquarters into base game as a crime against humanity - you asked positive reasons to play and here we are (some of it compared with x3, so if you played x4 it may not be an option for you):
- you can land onto stations and capital ships. Not too much content here but its a good step further.
- beside SETA there is boost option for Skunk (and npc ships) to speed up it movement.
- interesting mechanics with expanding stations from core part to parts you totally need. Still lack of closed production chain, but idea is good.
- capital ships equipment now attached to hull outside and can be broken to stop fire/movement/defence without even hull damage.
- stealing goods from station using hacking.
- hacking of different systems for stations and capital ships from outside or inside.
- several interesting drones used for non-combat purposes.
- new concept of administrative division: system -> cluster -> sector -> zone. And new type of in-between zone connection is highways.
- weapon modifications (stats boosters or debuster, depend on luck).
- some Skunk cockpit upgrades.
- special missions for top tier upgrades for Skunk.
- proper mining, so you no longer need to drag huge asteroids to start your empire.
- good music, visual picture.
- a lot of stuff and fixes with mods (in my oppinion "must have").
P.S. and "yes" I like the game and recommend it. Especially if you're fan of X universe.
My heart is still in X Rebirth.
Look at that:

X4 is miles away from that beauty
And I find the gameplay more suited to my taste in XR.

X4 may be the better game, but falls flat visually compared to Rebirth. Even Earth looks a bit naff, and getting there was nothing compared to passing through DeVries.
Nobody goes back to Dominoes to say they didn't like a pizza they ate 4 years ago. Some people just have no life though.
I'm getting notifications from a thread that ended in 2013. I'm only here responding to idiot necroposters. Eight years of silence from any threads about this game and out of nowhere, I start getting notifications from this thread, of all threads, explaining just how ♥♥♥♥ this game is. My point about taste stands. Yours about having no life, on the other hand, is demonstrably prescriptive retaliation. You and I both know it only takes a few second to type this out, but it's beside the point anyway. Whether I have a life or not has no bearing on the demonstrably ♥♥♥♥ quality of this game and the ♥♥♥♥ behaviour of its developers, who lied about from before day one. It really doesn't surprise me how successful Indian call centre scammers are if people are still spending money on Egosoft products.
after playing it again, the AI is a lot more alert and will go out of its way to attack you. so getting near a taranis is a lot more hairy now than before and will require some novas to take care of the beam weapons and one or two for the heavy fighter escorts, if possible with very good aim.
That to me is already a good step in the right direction.
i've also noticed there are more hostiles in zones where as before you'd be lucky to find something worth your time and effort to go after, being the areas were often sparse of hostile contacts.
again another positive.
i've only played a few hours, so i'm still getting back into it.
Edit: a number of days later and novadrones do indeed work well against Taranis as suspected. but my biggest gripe so far is when you dock on the station or ship, your character is frozen on board the skunk when docked. so you have to save the game and drop into the main menu and then reload so the character can move. i'm surprised that was not fixed and now it happened both in linux and windows versions as i've played both now.
It is basiclly a giant sand box game to explore and mess around with. Which makes a nice different take. You can roll around in sand box mode, do tasks in your own time, take missions of your own choice, or do your own thing. Which I think is a unique way of even making a game. I like to play this game when I am not up to war in WWII, or running amuke in the woods of some middle earth type world, or getting into shoot outs in some city, or punishing the Rebels in some Galaxy far, far, away.
Xrebirth is a real nice game to get away from all that. It has it's moments were things pick up, but the more you learn on how things work, and what you can do, you can even set up on how you plan to play it. So IGN can saw what ever, but I am enjoying it...
