what do engineers do on your own ship?

ive got some badly damaged weapons and hull damage and ihave a 1 start engineer. why isnt she repairing anything anymore?

Nothing at all - even if you talk to them, the option doesn't exist unless they are stationed at a dock

That makes sense though, since floating around in exposed space fixing a burning ship isn't my idea of a good time.

Engineers only do emergency repairs to the hull when in space, up to 25% hull. Yisha should be repairing systems as well.

You will need to land on a station for full repair.

When I've had an engineer on board they've repaired my weapons that have been damaged. They don't repair the hull. I think an engineer needs construction drones to do hull repairs.

your ship repairs itself faster when there is an engineer on board. I have confirmed that in game when taking out an enemy capital ship and I was taking damage. having the engineer on board helped.

engineers repairing in capital ships seem borked right now, but they work when you put them on your own ship.

Engineers seem to only work on your personal ship right now. On cap ships they are supposed to repair surface elements and engines, they do not repair the hull, you need to visit a capital shipyard for that (engineer for your personal ship).

yup. the script that controls their behavior doesn't work on capital ships, but it works fine on the player ship.

I have picked up a couple that have no skill stars in engineering and they do nothing.
Like I took damage to guns and they didn`t fix them. Bought a 2 star engineer and as soon as guns are damaged they are fixed.
