it isn't the GPU that is bottlenecking...

Damn havent used a resolution like that since 2000 - Surprised games are even developed with options for such a low rez these days. But if it helps you get playing, Fair nuff mate :)

Here is my issue, if you know your computer can't handle a game, why buy it, isn't that like paying full price to go see the hobbit in 3D without your 3D glasses on the entire time>?

why you complain ? its a known issue about perfomance problem on this game

stop yelling if you have nothing better to say it was just a suggestion and you fk up the thread

I know the games issues better than most, and simply telling them to turn the graphics down to 800x600 won't fix the issue of your CPU bottlenecking when it tries to <render>. I thought my point was valid but if you find it insulting i'm sorry, it wasn't meant to offend....

At 720p everything looks completely jagged, and awful. I couldn't imagine playing anything at 800x600 except my old DOS games that were made for the lower resolutions.

very true, In the age of 1080 and soon the 4k....800x600 seems so dated...

Here is the thing- for people trying to get decent framerates by either reducing graphics/resolution or trying to buy a better rig:
- I'ts not your system at fault.
Even with all the stuff in Rebirth (volumetric fog, large 3D models, lights and whatnot) the game should run smoothly on a mid-range computer.
I believe, it's not the graphics that holds the game down. If you go read your uidata.xml, it will tell you exactly what chokes up your computer. Not the graphics, but the calculations regarding the game mechanics regarding the trading and fighting and just trying to function as they intended.
Ships getting stuck in each other or get stuck in selling or buying while other ships won't leave the dock or the miner can't decide where to mine or what to mine, having a giant surpluss of something they cant' sell, etc. Also missing codes, missing files , bad files, etc..
The easy way to notice this, is that you get random slowdowns at places aren't being unique or much different, or just looking at something at a particular section will get your game slowing down.
The game is grinding on with the new patches but there are serious errors happening while the game is running.
Here is an example of what is going wrong:

"timestamp"]=1387762892.000000,
["message"]="Error: [TextureD3D::Activate] D3DXCreateTextureFromFileInMemoryEx() failed for (assets\\characters\\argon\\textures\\ar_m_spacesuit_props_diff) hr=-2147024882 error: E_OUTOFMEMORY description: Ran out of memory!",},

Exactly, the engine itself is crappy and full of bugs.

Setting resolution to 800x600, turning off shadows, antialiasing, SSAO, shaders, anisotropy etc. is NOT a "solution", it's just making your eyes bleed by year 1995 graphics.

The 'render' is likely not the main issue. The update portion is as has been said. Lowering resolution may not do anything. Turning shadows and SSAO off does make a difference as does reducing the view distance and lowering / raising the LOD (I still don't know what that slider is trying to tell me). Those are 'render' issues that will improve performance. Beyond that you really cannot do much else.
