Any map tips? It's confusing
Need help with the map. I love to explore, but the... zone maps (not even sure about their exact name, I mean the maps of the smallest areas) aren't helping. I don't understand where I am in relation to anything else and it's just really confusing. So far I've been following the missions without understanding where everything is. Is exploring worth it? It seems to clear up some of the dead areas on the maps, but it's difficult to be sure because I don't see any way to pan properly. Any tips on how to figure out these maps?

By the way, the game made me cringe at first, but it's kind of nice. I'm four hours into it and so far I want to keep playing.

Thanks, Myto-s. I'm talking about the map of each of the smallest areas, like "Azure Barrier". They just don't make sense.

One way to find out, sail out to the edge of the zone and keep going, don't worry you won't fall off and see what happens. This is your chance Columbus. When you get there tell us what you found... use that long range scanner.

Thanks for your immense wisdom. I already found out that the map is extremely confusing, and asked if there's any way to make it in any way related to what I see on the screen.

It's a basic zoom map, Zone, Sector Galaxy... what confusing about that. Highways link Zones, Superhighways link Sectors and Gates link Galaxies. The Zones even show you the highways and what direction they're going. They've recently been improved to where you can zoom and move the map... it can't get any easier and actually it's too easy XR makes space travel feel like a game.

I'm was talking about the individual zone maps. I can't find out how to move them or zoom in or out, they just keep centering on the items from the menu. I can't use them to explore because they don't relate to anything I do, only to the items that are already on the side menu. Maybe all the stations or asteroids or whatever are visible when I enter a zone, so there's no point in exploration. No way to tell.

the map system is different than the one used in x3. X3 system was more like excel spreadsheet + player's imagination. In XR, one can really feel the space, where the stations are, highway entries, gates etc. It may take you a while to get used to it, but just like in real life, the same way you know where your supermarket, bus stop and other landmarks are, you will remember the zones, sectors and even where particular stations are placed.

Put you mouse on the map itself and left click and drag, use the mouse wheel to zoom. If that doesn't work, try reloading default controls, exit and reload. Some have had wierd problems with mouse controls on menus. This is all I can think of to try and resolve.

Version 3.0 currently now on beta have zoomable maps that you can rotate, it is difficult getting some proper orientation with the current set up. I use a mix of checking the zone map (small one) and the radar, shift-r to disable/enable information overlay and shift-m to change between navigation and combat modes. The only good thing is that the Skunk icon in the map does point in the direction you are facing and that helps.

when entering a new zone, undiscovered stations will be listed as "???". you can click on ??? icon and hit shift+A. that will activate autopilot and Skunk should start flying towards that object (station). once you are close enough, scanner will get activated and ??? will get changed to an actual station name. while are you are there, do not forget smalltalk minigame or TAF mod to get trade updates from that station.

I swear I hear an aircompressor everytime I use Shift A.

This map is useful, it shows all the zones:

For in-zone navigation, it's fairly simple. On the map, just click at Skunk - the map will center at Skunk, thus showing you everything around.
I recommend using the sector map for navigating through the highway system, as it shows you were the highways are, where they head, and which direction you are facing.
The radar might help too.
Also, when you open the map, or detail screen of any space object, there's a button on the bottom of screen, saying "PLOT COURSE", click it and the game will automatically navigate you towards that selected object/zone.

In 3.0 version, you can move the map by clicking at it, and selecting objects by clicking at the icons. Then there will be navigation beacons, that you can drop between zones to mark shortcuts, or ways that lead to your hidden bases in empty space...

There's an "Autoroll" option (or something like that?) in the gameplay options, I totally enjoy using it.
