Skipping the campaign is a BAD idea, IMHO. That's where the tutorial is - not to mention the story.
You could also start with X3:TC. That game is a lot more mature than this one with many-a-mod and tons of online help.
Never mind about the others.
Well it's a free trial. So you can find out if you like it. It's not intended for people to beat and be done with the games completely for free. Plus the series has been around for awhile, so there is a lot of them.
Ie the First 4 games X beyond the frontie through to X3 are linked and have reocurring people in them x3TC follows the events of X3 and you guesses it X3 AP follows on from the event of X3TC. But the best place to start now days would be X2 IMHO.
I spent 100's pf hours in X2 then X3 i spent 1000's of hours before it was even on steam X3TC was IMHO not as good as X2 or X3 but was a bigger game without mods. X3AP kind of felt a bit slow to me and i never really got into it.
If you want to try:
X:BTF -> X:Tension (can skip?) -> X2:TT -> X3:Reunion -> X3:TC -> X3:AP (is an expansion, new elements built upon TC)
I've never played Tension and Rebirth. Think a bit of time will go in to trying out Tension ^.^
Start with this one. It's the only one you need. If you start with x3 then you'll be expecting Rebirth to be X4 and you'll sound like the rest of the crybabies around here.
