X-Series Where to start?
Never really played any of the X series but they have always caught my eye, considering they are on sale what would be the best one to start with?

Heard Rebirth had a bit of a rough launch so am guessing earlier titles may be a better choice?

Cheers

X Rebirth is in good shape now - Egosoft has done a superb job patching it up since release. I would say that X Rebirth is probably the most accessible of all X titles.

I would suggest Terran Conflict
And to avoid Rebirth...

If you want to know the story behind it all, start at Beyond the Frontier otherwise start at Rebirth.

Rebirth has very little in common with the older games .
Its a new take by Egosoft on the X Universe games so check out what game style you think you prefer before buying .

Me I loved the older games this one is not as much to my taste but try it on the free weekend costs nothing to so what have you got to lose .

Don't go back to the first title unless you really don't care about visuals. I digged out my old CD a few years back (yes, that shiny disc still worked) and it was horrible despite having played it back when it was rather new. It is however the only one I ever finished. I also remember X² having messy controls at the beginning, can't remember whether that got fixed or not.
If you find someone to confirm that Rebirth has been patched into a proper state by now I'd go with that one. Kinda reminded me of the old Freelancer tradelanes when I had a peek into it (haven't bought it myself yet because I figured I wouldn't have been able to get it working with the hardware I had back then - So I only know like the first 1-2 hours).

If you are going to start with X³ getting into the story might be a bit hard, even more so when going straight for Terran Conflict (I tried that one first after buying the superbox. I have had better ideas.)

Cool thanks for all the advice people:)
Patched well enough. Nearing 500 hours of playtime, and slowly attemting to complete all achievements, wouldn't do it if it wasn't true.

This one doesn't even own Rebirth. Oh boy.

Used to own, got refunded.
It's a matter of taste, no need to start that old argument again.

Try X: BTF for a little bit, then read wiki of the story up to X3:Reunion, then try out X3: Terran Conflict or Albion Prelude. Only try X: Rebirth if you're a patient person who doesn't run to the forums to complain when things don't work out the way you want.

I want to try X Rebirth and X3 on the free weekend, there's not much time and the games look complex. There are 3 X3s, which one do you recommend?:) I honestly can't tell the differences.

Also, do these games have narratives and do they matter much? Or is it mostly doing your thing like a single player MMO?

X3: Terran conflict is "the" X game people reffer the most. Albion prelude is the expansion that isn't story driven but changes the universe drastically. So if you want to try the older game and still be able to have a main story to follow - go with Terran conflict.

X: Rebirth is NOTHING like the previous games in the series and if you have the hardware to run it - it's much easier to get into, and it's very fun. I personally haven't seen a single bug since 2.51 patch and All 100h of gametime i have are played after 2.5 patch

If you prefer X Rebirth or the X3 games is a matter of taste. The free X weekend allows you to try both. As for which X3 game, I would suggest Terran Conflict. Yes the story would not be the start in both cases, but you really dont have to know it from the start.

If you play X Rebirth, ignore the plot during the weekend. You wont have time to finish it. Start with a free gamestart like the Trade gamestart which gives you quite a big trade ship from the start. If you want to know more, have a look at these videos:

Many thanks for the response & its great to see a Dev response among those:)

Will probably pick up the X3 bundle + give Rebirth a quick try over the weekend & see if I should grab that as well.

Cheers
