No. You can't fly anything but the Skunk. And no - You'll never be able to fly anything but the skunk in X:R.
However, Egosoft is working on a new game that will offer multiple player ships - more like the previous titles
Too bad, one day devs might look at what innovations drive players to the game instead of what innovations make their personal agendas look better.
Maybe I will check out the next game, but the industry moves faster, my loyalty will be going to the first company that shows they are not scared to innovate to please the player.
I just came on the forums to check and see if they fixed the AI from the previous title haha, thanks for helping me dodge a bullet guys.

Well it is ur choice, but this game is extremely good even with one ship. You can not fly others but u can upgrade, and customize it, additionally there is a lot to do in the space. In my opinnion while still would be nice to have more ships - with one it is still a good game. I thought like u on the beginning (yes then on the beginning it was crap), but now after this 2 years and 2 dlcs this game is worth spending money on it. I enjoyed it a lot... But thats my opinnion.
To me, that's kinda exactly what they did with X:R - They took the idea and the universe they had and took a fresh approach to the whole game. Skunk is very customizable and you can fit it to be a dogfighting machine, or a sluggish trader. It's up to you.
Also, like i said 100 times before - I'm 100% sure no one enjoyed sitting in a freighter going 60m/s and waiting for SETA to dock in X3. most of the players just rushed to get a frigate and just stuck with it. And if you're up for looks - then there's 4 different cockpits for the skunk that basically make it a different ship alltogether :)
But after some time i got used to fly only one ship in XR, this game can bring a lot of fun.
Uhm that's pretty much what I do most of the time - in Rebirth. Throw in the bridge mod, and command a battleship from the deck - capships were never so immersive in X series before.

EDIT: Just had a look - the bridge mod is abandoned, does it still work with the new patch and HoL?
Hell in X2 i mostly piloted the Split mamba and in X3 the Nova and seldom change it cause they were fast and capable to fight.
I dont liked fly big ones cause they were sloooooow and boring to fly.
It's a big issue because one of the incredibly major draws in a privateer style game is the goal of upgrading your ship and outfitting it in different ways.
The *only* real outfitting you can do in X-Rebirth are to the engines and shields... That's it. Otherwise all you have are different drones and weapons which you basically just get all of them so no choices to be made there.
Is the game still good? Sure, but they did make a pretty big mistake in not letting you upgrade and change your ship. Hopefully they fix that in the next game.
However this argument simply dsitracts and detracts from the many other things this game now offers.
There are a growing number of ways to customise the Skunk and its weapons. I personally would have liked to change the actual structure, to add modules to it, for better fighting or trading. It would have been nice to grow the interior spaces and the exterior.
Its only when I see these discussions that I actually miss flying multiple ships.
I'm really playing no different now than how I used to play in X3.
Regardless, it is a pity that you are not finding what you want in X: Rebirth. I know it is tempting to personally fly the Arawn, but I know I wouldn't be able to tolerate it's snail slow conventional movement speed if I had to rely on it to get from one zone to the next.
I'm sure there are pleanty more games out there to your liking... Like Elite: Dangerous, or Star Citizen. Yeah, those sound like really good games.
