I DEMAND Retribution. Is the Balor the way to go?

After the loss of one of my large mining ships, i NEED to take out a xenon K ship.
Since i cant afford a huge destroyer, should i get a Balor?

In your experience, how effective is the Balor agains other large combat capital ships? Should i spend money on one? will it suffice to take out one of those xenon K ships?
Ibe read some nasty things about the Balor not shooting its torpeodes, not deploying drones, and being useless, but thats very old information. Dunno if it was fixed in latest patches.

I replied suggesting you get the big guys like the Arawn, but I missed the paragraph where you said you dont have the cash for that :D

One thing, in Home of Light there are areas where the Atlas Pirates have Arawns. Might be possible to capture one? I dont think the Balor is effective at all, maybe someone knows better. I have a Taranis and a Balor but I dont actually fight much, I just use them as escort for my trade ships (and my trade ships are Lyrmekrons, which actually might be able to take on a K :D ).

What zone is it in? Can you tempt it over to some other station? Revenge is a dish best served on somebody else's dime.

Balor is op because of the Novadrone launcher its the most best ship you can get to either snipe a ship from a far or supplement your boarding attempts via aoe turret mount destruction. If microed it can destroy anything that hasnt novadrones fitted.

@Axeface: interesting! i love "borrowing" ships from pirates. I havent tried to capture a military ship yet, but i think ill give it a shot later.

Zloth: I completely agree! Unfortunately, there wasnt a station anywhere near. It was in maelstrom in one of those deserted areas.

@Ink: I think i will save my game, get a Balor and give it a try.

Plz.read some info about capturing, before becoming frustrated by just trying it. You have to level up your marines, starting capturing smaller ships. And you need the best shield and weapons to encounter big capitals on your own.... Just saying.
And the Balor... It is an artillery ship, when the k getting in range it is outmatched. Fine to have a lot Balors to attack while a arawn is playing tank.

Well that went terribly! lol
Bought 2 Balors, went back there, and a single K9 destroyer ate them both for breakfast before those useless floating turds could even deplete its shields. :(

I tought they (Balors) were supposed to fire torpedoes or something? they just attacked with their pathetic turrets and drones.

I tried several times (saved game). Using the attack -> object command, setting the def officer to agressive, attack all enemies in area, etc.
Never did they fire those alleged torpedoes, that K9 handed their poopholes to them :(

Thanks, I do have the best shield, engines, etc. And i have boarded several ships before. But freighters, never a military one.
I want to trash that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, not capture it :)

When you want to use Balors, they're best used to have the Captain sit in one spot with Hold Position and the Defense Officer set to Attack. This will allow the Balor to launch it's missiles without you telling it to actually go fight the K.

I didnt know this. Whats the range on the torpedoes? Gonna try it today and i'll tank with the skunk.

From what I can tell, maybe around 15km? They don't have a 'Max Range' stat in the ingame encyclopedia.

Man, as much as i like this game, it has some of the most unintuitive mechanics ibe ever seen in a piece of software.

Anyway, i loaded my saved game to before i wasted money on those balors. Saved more cash and bought a Taranis!
Went back there with it, and mowed down that K9 in a couple of minutes haha!

So is it safe to say that unless you plan on micromanaging the hell out of them with awkward commands, Balors are a waste of money?
