The game, eventually, matured in ver 4.30 (!!!) You should upgrade to it if you haven't done it yet (or your computer hasn't done it for you) before touching anything
I cannot think of anything you will miss (and I did research it for myself) apart from some story, whether you choose either freeplay or the campaign.
I suggest you look at the most subscribed workshop mods and thank the modders for making this game so much more playable/enjoyable.
Are you looking to do the whole X thing where you build up multiple stations and a fleet over a few hundred hours? If so, you're probably fine with the free start and reading a few guides on how to play. If you just want to get familiar with the game again, then the campaign will give you a nice "I won, time for the next game" point and a lot more story about what has been going on in the universe after the gates all shut down.
I play vanilla for all my games unless it ARMA :). I wanted to play because that game has a charm about it. I was drawn to the game but never got around to it for some reason. I even like 'show me your wares'...
As for the story I have to admit that I have a hard time piecing any story together unless its told incredibly well. So I can't say I'm playing for the story per se but the setting they may bring you on your journey.
As for the learning curve it something I love doing is getting into a complex game and just diving in!!
Unless X4 goes on sale anytime soon I'll be on this!!
Actually like hearing about things like this. I can watch game play but to pick up on the nuances in the game is difficult..
Right now I have a huge backlog and adding X4 won't help any. So I decided to put the shinny new game down and pick the game I donenjoy back up and finish it to a degree. :)
Most likely going to play through the games campaign and see where X4 is by then. :)
Thanks for the reply
I'm in the same boat as the op and only played 30 hours(exactly according to steam lol) on xr. I even grabbed the dlc at one point, but never played again. My question is how is the end game here? After I finish the campaign is there a lot to do? I read you can't even take over sectors and there's not much fighting so what's the point in even getting a fleet to begin with?
In the mean time i managed to pick up X rebirth collectors edition for £8 on G2A and ive been having a blast with it. Reading through the discussions its clear the game still has some issues but the modding community have addressed most of them. I was able to download a good few mods from steam workshop that work with 4.30 and so far ive had no issues. Cant wait to jump into X4 but XR will do me fine till then.

I started dabbling through the campaign and free modes again. Just started getting aquatinted with the controls again.
During my campaign run I remember one of the first big battles and even loading back into it now I'm having a hard time clearing out the enemies so I can advance in the story line. I forgot the mission but it's within the first couple of hrs.
I have to get a hold on combat and I should be okay. Hopefully by the time I drop a couple of hundred he's in rebirth I'll be picking up x4
Wow, never would have expected that.
