Title: hay all, I'm thinking about putting some time into this before I get x4. It's been sitting in my steam library for 5 yrs with a paltry 30 hrs of play time.

I enjoy the game and would like to at least get my money's worth out of it before I pick up X4.

Just need to consider my approach. If I skip the campaign will I be missing any of what the game has to offer?

Looking at getting a chunk of content out of the way so if the campaign delivers that then that's great too.

Thank you!

Forget the campaign, unless you are in love with the Egosoft stories. The rest has LOTS to give and there are mods in the Workshop (free) that give quite a few interesting and challenging starts.
The game, eventually, matured in ver 4.30 (!!!) You should upgrade to it if you haven't done it yet (or your computer hasn't done it for you) before touching anything

I just started up another playthrough of this game. I did the campaign over a year ago and so went with freeplay now. The campaign can be a little restrictive and anoying in parts but I suppose I am glad I played it.

I cannot think of anything you will miss (and I did research it for myself) apart from some story, whether you choose either freeplay or the campaign.

I suggest you look at the most subscribed workshop mods and thank the modders for making this game so much more playable/enjoyable.

The nicest thing about the campaign is that it acts as a tutorial, much like the Terran Conflict and Goner campaigns back in X3:TC. It opens up the galaxy slowly and gives you some goals to meet, which is a big help for folks not used to the whole semi-sandbox thing Egosoft normally does.

Are you looking to do the whole X thing where you build up multiple stations and a fleet over a few hundred hours? If so, you're probably fine with the free start and reading a few guides on how to play. If you just want to get familiar with the game again, then the campaign will give you a nice "I won, time for the next game" point and a lot more story about what has been going on in the universe after the gates all shut down.

The campaign is fun and they reward you with very good ships and weapons along the way.

i'm coming from x4 back to rebirth, i also hadn't played much of this game and was excited for x4. x4 is very unfinished in its current state, the universe feels empty and although i haven't played all that much from what i've been reading it doesn't seem like there is much point to invest many hours into it. i also personally like the universe in x rebirth more, the stations are more interesting to look at, the sectors feel more immersive, and in my opinion the flight model is better. to each their own though, i know that wasn't answering your question but i just wanted to give my opinion on both games as i know rebirth gets a lot of undeserved flack.

Humm .. much to consider..

I play vanilla for all my games unless it ARMA :). I wanted to play because that game has a charm about it. I was drawn to the game but never got around to it for some reason. I even like 'show me your wares'...

As for the story I have to admit that I have a hard time piecing any story together unless its told incredibly well. So I can't say I'm playing for the story per se but the setting they may bring you on your journey.

As for the learning curve it something I love doing is getting into a complex game and just diving in!!

Unless X4 goes on sale anytime soon I'll be on this!!

Actually like hearing about things like this. I can watch game play but to pick up on the nuances in the game is difficult..

Right now I have a huge backlog and adding X4 won't help any. So I decided to put the shinny new game down and pick the game I donenjoy back up and finish it to a degree. :)

Most likely going to play through the games campaign and see where X4 is by then. :)

Thanks for the reply

I was considering giving this a shot also. X4 is fun, and I've played about 22 hours now. But I've been reading about the end game and it seems rather bland atm. I've already got a station and a fleet of miners, and the next step in that seems rather dull since I'd be working towards getting carriers and destroyers that apparently don't work very well(bad balance and ai). So I think I'm going back xr for now.

I'm in the same boat as the op and only played 30 hours(exactly according to steam lol) on xr. I even grabbed the dlc at one point, but never played again. My question is how is the end game here? After I finish the campaign is there a lot to do? I read you can't even take over sectors and there's not much fighting so what's the point in even getting a fleet to begin with?

try the CWIR mod and you will find it entertaining and also hard to play. I have now 3xx hours in Rebirth with mods and enjoy every hour of it
I bought X4 and its been awesome. Ive decided to wait on starting a playthrough though till January when 1.5 drops and becomes stable.

In the mean time i managed to pick up X rebirth collectors edition for £8 on G2A and ive been having a blast with it. Reading through the discussions its clear the game still has some issues but the modding community have addressed most of them. I was able to download a good few mods from steam workshop that work with 4.30 and so far ive had no issues. Cant wait to jump into X4 but XR will do me fine till then.

Glad to see some replys this morning. Seemss like people are taking off of X4 to go back to X:R and some even back to x3.

I started dabbling through the campaign and free modes again. Just started getting aquatinted with the controls again.

During my campaign run I remember one of the first big battles and even loading back into it now I'm having a hard time clearing out the enemies so I can advance in the story line. I forgot the mission but it's within the first couple of hrs.

I have to get a hold on combat and I should be okay. Hopefully by the time I drop a couple of hundred he's in rebirth I'll be picking up x4

Wow it is great to see i am not the only one doing a similar play through. I like many others gave up on the game near release. I want X4 also but like you i couldnt justify it without sinking some time in Rebirth. Plus i expect i am getting some vouchers for xmas so will wait for those haha. So i am currently doing a campaign playthrough with a bunch of mods. Loving it so much actually and working through the campaign at mo and taking my time. Question when do MK2 weapons unlock for campaign playthrough? I am at the point i have to finish building plot station.

I would recommend farming missions for easy credits. The hard pirate station attack missions are easy if u let the station do all the work. Haha. boarding as many ships as u can. Easy ships to sell. One other good thing i have read is in a sector take as many build station missions as u can. Even same station missions, reason being is they all pay out for one station being built. So 5 missions can be finished by doing one station

Wow, never would have expected that.

If they do too well, they'll be done before X4 is solid!
