Wolf Packs are Overpowered & Over Aggressive
I get it, wolf packs are supposed to be HARD to fight but in their current state they are damned impossible to fight. And it's not a simple case of "GeT BeTtEr SpEAr SkIlL", because it doesn't matter if you manage to horribly maim or even kill some they just KEEP attacking you as if the pack is infinite and immune to pain. And no you can't just sneak away because they'll always spot you (even if you have fox enchants), and they will almost always (even if you have deer enchants) get the jump on you with an instant wound. And no you almost never can just escape asap because they're almost guaranteed to get at least one extra hit in. And if that wasn't enough, there's a good chance they'll follow you to the next tile, engage you, instantly get another bite in, and then another if you try to escape again (I've had this go round and round several times once).

Twice now I've also not even been able to try to save scum to go a different path to avoid them while traveling, because either the same pack magically catches up or there's just multiple packs roaming. I'm always either injured or restricted to the safety of my hut's interior. I go out to try to get some veggies? Wolf pack. I go out for some water? Wolf pack. I go out to get teeny bit of firewood so my fireplace doesn't run out? You guessed it! Wolf pack! I was excited to try surviving winter to get to spring finally but it feels like I'm being punished by the wolf-apocalypse and it just isn't fun in the slightest to deal with. You can't even just avoid them by staying in the south because you need deer (who share wolf spawns) for food, and I've still had 2 wolf pack encounters so far in the south anyways.

In the real world, while strong, wolves are NOT this insanely aggressive towards humans (only 498 attacks on humans between 2002 and 2020 for reference). In reality, wolves are highly intelligent and like most predators would rather avoid unknowns so they can avoid unnecessary risks (if a predator is injured, it can't hunt and will likely starve). Not to mention, if IRL wolves are getting maimed or steadily getting killed one after the other, they are NOT sticking around.

TL;DR: Wolves are overpowered, over-aggressive, omnipresent (once they start spawning), and have 0 fear or self-preservation mechanics. It's like I'm fighting zombies except it's not at least fun.

Yeah I feel much the same way, to the point that I am not looking forward to when my newest toon reaches winter. my old one finally kicked hte bucket after sustaining so many lacerations i couldn't keep on top of all the infection risks. and yes all of them were from wolf attacks.

Yep, wolf pack are too aggressive. And you don't have a counter measure against them except stay in home which can't be a long term method. We need some ways to avoid or repel them. If only practice spear can increase spear fighting skill as TI, not only we can counter the wolf pack but also staying home in winter won't have nothing to do and so boring.

Thank you for the feedback!
I agree with most of your points. We will be toning down wolves considerably in the near future. Wolf morale is not where it should be at the moment.

Had my first run in with a wolf today. Reading this I don't know if I should consider myself extremely lucky that I was able to escape on my first try :winter2019surprisedyul:

Oh bless you that would be so lovely. Would be nice to not have to save after every action when I'm outside or save every time I'm about to go outside out of fear of catching the 'wolf plague'.
I think that the most important part is that your clothing does not grant armor (might be a bug?), so you have practically 1% chance of not getting hit when a wolf attacks you.

I wouldn't say that's the *most* important issue here but it is a big one now that you mention it. For wolf fights in winter I had all leather clothes except gloves along with fur mittens and fur cloak, and in spring I have all leather clothes. Neither clothing set seemed to have influenced the outcomes
I've found wolves to be a lot more manageable after building a partridge enclosure at the hut.
It reduces cabin fever, allows for producing protein and growing Fireroot, lets you separate corpses and rotten remains from where you sleep, can hold storage pots for water, and even provides a little firewood, all without being attacked.

Once setup, you can clean up and be safe for days until your wounds are healed enough to go back into wolf territory.
I was hoping building campfires would keep the wolves at bay, or at least make it easier to flee into my house when they show up. I tried building 4 campfires, but it didnt seem to have any effect.

A related question, is it only in combat you can change weapon. I wanted to have my torch ready to scare off wolves.
My wife noticed something. Wolves do seem to sleep, and there are certain times of day where I have not seen wolves at all.

I don't think it's they sleep so much as they have patrol paths. I'll see them on my home tile for two separate time periods (afternoonish and late evening). Problem is they take multiple in game hours to move on which can be really frustrating if you need to do some things like get food, firewood, etc.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, but yeah as far as I'm aware you can only change your main/off hand weapon in combat (or by virtue of only having those weapons on you).

I don't think they sleep. However, they do travel around the map, on the same route and at approximately the same time each day, so with experience you can figure out when in the day they are likely to be (or not be) in any specific tile.

Using Google Translate (which may not be 100% accurate), this comment reads:
"In the latest beta, I learned about the claustrophobia debuff, but I don't know what to do in winter. There is almost nothing to do in 30 days. I hope there will be a winter animal that can be captured, such as an elk that can pull a sled? You have to find something to do in winter, right? You can't always let the wolves bite you. And there are no special plants in winter, right? Give a good review to the new "Stone Mill", come on."

To be honest, most of my winter activity involves wood carving, flute playing, and gathering up wood and occasionally water when my stock runs out. I think fireroot can allegedly survive in the winter but I don't think it grows much if at all. I have the cabin fever debuff pretty much all the time but it's bearable if you have a nice enough house at least. Haven't played in a few updates though, so I'm not sure what the wolves are like to deal with at the moment.
