Same as most other classes. Get cards that carry early, pick an archetype and stick to it.

Star cards are really strong, so getting star generation and good star cards is great. The power that gives block from using stars is nice. Also note that stuff that removes cast cost also applies to star cost.

Forge is an easy win condition, you just need to get enough survivability to go with it since you usually can't use it every round and it takes a while to scale.

Supermassive and generating tons of (neutral) cards is a bit rng but it works and is fun. Neutral cards are usually useful, and there are other cards that benefit from generating cards too.
Just to fill this in until the pros show, I've managed to win once or twice with the Regent, the main issue being resource management, because you want stars, regular "energy" and damage output at the same time, unless you go for forging, which then somewhat randomizes whenever you get the sword unless you get lucky and have the "draw the sword" cards.
So basically, ramp up damage and star cards, pick up anything AoE on your way if you can because Regent get's really bogged down if you have multiples to kill and they add pesky cards to your deck in my experience, so Black Hole, Child of the Stars etc.
Then, obviously if you decide to go with forging, don't also start adding star stuff because you'll end up with turns where all you get to play is a Defend and a Strike.
Oh, also, git gud. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. :bulletkin:

How is this panning out for you? Honest question. Because it was bad advice in the first game and from what I can tell, it's still the same: you need to adapt instead of railroading yourself into a "build". Synergies are good, but sometimes you need something else to survive the next few floors.

OP: don't underestimate common cards like Glow and Photon Cut. A lot of Regent's kit is 0 Energy, but needs Stars. So glow is pretty strong because it'll allow you to both draw said 0 Energy cards and generate the Stars they need. It might seem obvious, but I thought I'd mention it because people get stuck on simple things in this game.

Other than that: I wouldn't rely on a single one of his mechanics too much, unless you can spot a really strong combo cycle along the way. Sovereign Blade is slow to build, but is fine to have around to deal finishing blows to chunky enemies. Some of the Star cards are good at dealing with multiple mobs, but aren't great at single target removal.

You can also post a screenshot of a run overview (found in the Compendium), maybe I can tell something from that. I've beaten A10 with Regent, btw. Not to say I'm any kind of expert, just that I'm not completely talking out of my butt :)
forge is best treated as supplementary or a boss/elite solution
I end up perma resting with Regent if you can get your hands on the +5 max HP for resting seems to me the strongest starting bonus as youll end up with 110+ HP which lets you tank enough to counter the slow set ups. Other than that star build is the most consistent for me, try to get some card manipulation going. Photon attack, cosmic indifference are good starts. Early crush under mitigates the multi attacks really well while providing necessary AoE. Some patters + Celestial might with the card manipulation can go a long way. I wouldnt bother with patter if you dont have multi attacks. If you have decent star generation going the card that blocks and costs 2 stars but 0 energy can save you from bad turns. All that being said I got the worst winrate by far with the Regent so take what I say with a grain of salt.
This class is ASS ! ! !
Many forge cards + few Parry powers + as many Summon Forth skills as you can find. Parry power seems weak, but if you stack few copies of it it suddenly becomes a viable defensive play to use your 2 mana blade with still meager damage just for 12-18 block gain. And if you have both blade and summon forth in same hand you can spend your 3 mana to deal some damage + gain some block + return the blade back for next time you need it.
edit: I just thought it was funny to mention, but apparently regent is my most succesful class, since i am now playing him on ascention 2 to do the 15 elites and 15 bosses unlocks.

To clarify, I don't mean attempting to force a build. Like you said, synergies. I like picking cards that are strong at the moment and also enable archetypes for later. And also not picking stuff that doesn't add to the deck is at least as important.
1 card slot wasted on exclusively resource exchange when other classes just do their stuff right away. There's no positive part about the initial resource management.

I assume the idea behind it is massive damage ramps, but it's definitely a lot more micro managing than other characters.
I mean, look at Devastate, 40 damage for 1 energy, but also 4 stars, so chances you'll play that in consecutive rounds even if you have two copies are limited...
3 most important things i've found is the pathing on your map #1 and upgrading cards at almost every campsite #2 doing as many elites as possible #3

he's definitely the hardest so you really need to pay attention to even the smallest things as to where other characters can just steamroll
It is a difficult class as you have to manage two mana types which can make obtaining a build a longer process and defense a more difficult hurdle early on. But the regent can be very powerful. Personally I ignore the forge stuff and focus on cards that can give me stars and that use stars.
