Trouble getting to marshy area/metal detector

I've updated the walking map to show the spot I want to reach in the woods, but the game won't let me take the turning in the woods. It says I need to have some idea of where I'm trying to get to first. Tried everything I can think of. Any suggestions please?

And you have:
- fixed the metal detector
- looked at the signs
- taken the branch
- combined the fixed metal detector with the trail (instead of just clicked at the trail)
