game no longer opening

I played the game perfectly fine a few days ago. Now my laptop, on which I originally downloaded and played the game, had a windows update and it results in the game no longer working. "Could not initialize directx adapter". I have scouted for solutions but the older ones talk about config files that don't exist (or I am just too blind), and I cannot install an older version of directx either. I have yet to beat the game and would love to do so, but I don't know how to fix this.
