What's the ending all about? (Spoilers!)
Hey guys.

So, I've just finished it - and enjoyed it a lot. Yet I can't really come to terms with the ending - so, the alvä gets her wings and our little cutie turns to stone. Fine, but... why?

What exactly did "we" do to give the fairy wings?

I did some googling and the only thread I found about this had people agreeing on how "the little creature fulfilled its purpose and therefore turnt to stone again" - yet I find myself completely lost with this explanation.

We actually didn't do anything besides carrying the little thing around.

Is anyone able to enlighten me? Please?^^

Do you remember the beginning of the story? He was considered insignificant, sort of a nobody, with no purpose, no brain, dumb as a stone - In the end, was he so insignificant?

Watch the very beginning again, and then give it another thought. :)

The oldfashion scandinavian folklore stories always have a moral to it. This one is a good example of a traditional tale.

I interpret that as the insignificant creature giving its lifeforce so Alva could have wings again. It's his purpose. He wanted it so much, he managed to do it in the end.

I also interpret the insignificant creature as one of the many woodland spirits (that would explain its magical ability to manipulate the four elements) and that possibly it only turns to stone during the day (like trolls do) and goes back to being normal during the night.

Here is my take:

The trolls are the only creatures in the game that turns to stone when touched by sunlight, and the troll king immediately identifies the creature as a newborn. Strongly suggests he was a small troll himself. Even looks like them.

He emerges from an old grave when born, though, which is where I'm lost, cause I haven't heard of trolls being born from corpses like some undead.

As for the wings, I can think of two possibilities: Either the sun regenerated the alva, which I believe less in, since it would mean she had little reason for sadness and could just wait for morning. OR the creatures efforts and care resonated with her until she was finally rejuvenated. I believe most in the second option, cause merely making progress in the game is said to increase the strength of her glow. Stands to reason then that enough progress would heal her completely.

Makes for a better theme too: Power of friendship and stuff.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. :)

i like the "power of friendship"-idea - yet I still kinda hope the little guy really just turns to stone by day and will be his little self again by night.
In any case I found reading your takes on it very enjoyable. :)

I've found this piece of info on wikipedia about it :) :
"Smaller trolls are attested as living in burial mounds and in mountains in Scandinavian folk tradition."

I just finished the game myself and found this thread wondering the same thing. The theory of it being a small troll sounds valid. To support that, I found this[translate.google.com] definition of the word Oknytt on Swedish wikipedia. It's translated as both Goblins and Unknown(Foreigners) on the same page, but further down, it appears to say "For example" or possibly "Including" (translated by google as "a pick"), and lists "Small Troll" as the first one. While some of the words in English get kind of strange after that, looking at the original text shows many of the other creatures in the game, like the gardstompte, brunnsgrubbe, alvor, and others.

I love how every once in a while this thread gets a new comment. :) It's nice to know the game is being played and thought about.

That being said, I feel like the troll-theory definetely makes a lot of sense. If we combine it with the "friendship is magic"-take, the ending fits perfectly.
