What I played: fault milestone one

What I expected: a story in a JRPG-style fantasy setting with reportedly good writing

What I got: a thought-provoking and at times intensely emotional story, very rich in characterization, set in a very detailedly-developed world, and exploring philosophical issues of culture and technology and much more.

Yes, I do indeed recommend this.

(Disclosure: I acquired this visual novel by preordering it during (though not directly through) its Kickstarter, at near full price.)

从最早结束milestone2a的一周目萌生起汉化fault的念头到现在8月26日简体中文终于发布——好吧也就才过去九个月而已。

但是感觉像是很久以前的事情了。

居然能陆续遇到志同道合的伙伴上路，顺利的开展翻译，与善解人意的官方开展联系，最终在今天意外的看到官方中文版推出（要不是好友说我自己完全没意识到···），真真是始料未及啊！

fault真的是一款十分优秀的游戏/视觉小说。

它的故事展开在一个“启蒙时代的黎明正在照亮整个世界”的舞台上。

而在这个理性、科学和文明登场的世界上剑与魔法也仍然占据一席之地——甚至一反刻板印象的魔法使们还在唱响主角。

与此同时，故事的内核还发源于旧时代的科学幻想，是不是也能叫做科学幻想ADV呢（大雾）

你将看着可爱的女孩子们跨上旅程，见证社会的变动与人性的光辉。简单的架构下是蕴含着的强大张力，和倾注的充沛情感。

这样的设定优秀而少见，情节本身也生动又感人，加上游戏隔三差五经常打折——所以它肯定值得一玩，嗯！

在milestone one中莉特娜、赛尔菲妮和露恩的旅程才刚刚展开，而它的制作者们一定也正在努力为大家呈现后续精彩的情节，希望我们的汉化也能跟上她们的步伐（起码现在看起来充满希望）。

在此之上，希望大家游戏愉快，希望我们真的能够将原作的内容传递给中文玩家。

fault - milestone one is a short but enjoyable visual novel about culture, science and family. The game takes place in a fantasy setting where the main power source is mana. Due to circumstances that you'll find out if you play the game, the two main characters are transported to an unknown part of the world. The world this game creates is fairly interesting and it goes pretty in-depth on how it all works.

The intro and ending of the novel were probably the weakest parts as they seem to be building up for the sequel. This isn't really a bad thing but it all feels disconnected from the main plot - spoilers, the ending is a cliffhanger which is pretty lame. I've seen some negative reviews on the store page with short playtime which makes me think they quit at the intro which is a shame since it gets much better! Outside of the intro I think the characters work really well off of each other and it's nice to see their stories develop.

The presentation is pretty good - you can see some of the art on the store page. The music pieces feel pretty short and repetitive but they are effective in the scenes they are played in. The camera will sometimes zoom in on characters, which is what the "unique 3D Camera system" is, I think?

I've tried to keep this review vague because the game is pretty short - it took me around 4 hours to finish and I think people should experience the story for themselves. It is a little expensive so if you didn't get this in the humble bundle like I did, I might recommend waiting for a sale as there isn't really any replayability - there's a single choice in the game and it doesn't change anything from what I could tell? I still really liked it though and I am excited to play the sequel!

Small and minor edit: also some of the achievements are dumb but that doesn't really matter!

fault -milestone one- is the first episode of the fault series that tells the story of Princess Selphine Rughzenhaide and her Guardian Ritona Reighnvhasta as they run away from an assault that is lead by Melano. As the duo managed to escape from the Melano's party, they got teleported (shift) to the other side of the world. Their journey began as they want to return to Ruzenheid and confront the opposing mysterious party that is supposingly lead by Melano.

Trying not to spoiling much on this review, -milestone one- is mostly focused on the mysterious character named Rune/Sara and "her" dark pastime. The story started light-hearted but more and more mystery comes up later on and the duo is determined to solve this problem regarding Rune/Sara despite the limitation that is imposed to their body because they are running out of natural mana to supplement their body. Do note that the ending of this VN is quite sad (like CLANNAD-ish sad) and twisted (how twisted? Just play the game :^)

There is only one choice in the VN which serves as turning point of the story. The characters are likeable and the story gets darker and more interesting starting from Chapter 5 as more foreshadowing are created that will pique your interest to finish the story until the end. Lots of action in the beginning of the chapter but it might get a little bit information crunch towards the end and a big plot twist at the ending.

The UI for this game is very fluid and vivid. I was amazed that this was actually done on Ren'py (props to Sekai Project for porting it I guess) but it's kinda feel too bad that this amazing VN is not voiced. The art is well done ESPECIALLY the main menu artwork, I kinda wish that they have some 1920x1080 artwork but all of them are 1280x720, it's not a bad thing but it leaves me wants more of this epic art. The soundtrack that plays along with the scene are reaaaaallly well done, it helps build up the atmosphere for the situation pretty well especially that one time on Rune's madness scene!

8.8/10 a must buy Visual Novel, some of my interpretation of the story might be wrong because my Japanese is not perfect (since I play the beta build) but it's enough to make me immerse myself in the story (it actually have some hard kanji too so yeah :^))
It would be a 9.3/10 if it was voiced but it's already great in its current state. Definitely recommended if you like the classic Sci-Fi theme that mixes kingdom with magic and stuff.

《fault 第一章》是一款由Alice in Dissonance开发，并在2013年在日本发售一款视觉小说游戏。此后2014年，sekai project发行了带有英/日两种语言的导演剪辑版，同时也计划登陆索尼ps4与psv平台。本作是《fault》系列的开篇作，后面又依次发布了《fault 第二章》(fault - milestone two)和《fault:沉默的学者》(fault:silence the pedant)。游戏是线性化的，玩家所能选择的东西很少，基本不会干涉后面的剧情。剧情从侍从莉托娜和公主赛尔芬妮被来袭的佣兵攻击后，意外地被传送到异地，两人为了回国开始旅行展开。游戏剧情由Munisix编写并导演，Hare Konatsu负责美术设计。游戏剧情原本是给一款RPG游戏作背景的，后来Munisix对它不满意，经过符合他的期望的修改后发现已经和最初的计划相差甚远。后来sekai project找上门来，谈论英语本地化的工作，他们将作品经过润色和美术加工，并且参加了2014年的kickstarter的众筹活动。最后游戏获得评价性的成功。

游戏的画风十分地轻柔唯美，有强烈的透明感，但是感觉到游戏人物的绘画的精细度不够高，相比其它的galgame不是很出色

2.游戏剧情9/10
游戏流程2小时，算是短篇了。游戏对场面的刻画十分好，从开始打斗的激烈场面到后面的轻松愉快的日常剧情，切换十分自如。剧情方面引人深思，主仆两人的旅途中见证了感人的故事，后面结尾的部分留了一个高潮，让人迫不及待地想看下一部。作为视觉小说是值得肯定的，但是作为游戏，玩家根本不能干涉剧情的发展。
3.游戏UI8/10
游戏的UI做得十分棒，不会有突兀的感觉，更新支持了中文，国内玩家不用啃生肉了

4.音效演出7.5/10
游戏的背景音乐都很不错，清新愉快，拨人心弦，我都很喜欢；环境音做得也很到位，酒馆里、街道上人群声音都有。但是游戏里面没有配音，感觉是本作的一大遗憾吧

一本不错的视觉小说，剧情写得都很棒，都可以做成番来看了。游戏本身只有一个选项，不管选哪个都没有分支剧情。人设都很不错，印象深刻。虽然流程稍短，但是绝对值它这个价格。游戏全成就不简单，附获得两个隐藏成就方法：
1.成就：反社会人格 连续观看少女露恩不停刺少年的血腥CG长达2小时
2.成就：这不是那种游戏 反复观看50次赛尔菲妮换衣服的场景

⠀안녕하세요, 이번에 리뷰할 제품은 《책임 - 첫 번째 중대사》입니다. 언어의 힘이란 참으로 대단합니다. 원래 저에게 있어서 '비주얼 노벨' 이라는 장르는 단순히 도전과제를 획득하기 위한 게임, 딱 그 정도 수준이었습니다. 그도 그럴게 노벨, 언어가 전부인 게임에 언어를 제대로 이해할 수 없으니 당연한 일이죠. 그리고 이건 제가 스팀에서 '온전히 제대로 맛 본' 첫 번째 비주얼 노벨 게임입니다. 이 게임을 통해 비로소 전 확신하게 되었어요. 내 몸 속에도 '네다씹'의 피는 흐르고 있구나라는 것을요. 어우, 저 놈 네다씹이었네라고 욕 하셔도 상관 없습니다 흑흑. 셀 쨩, 룬룬! 너무 카와이이이하다능. 어이어이, 이거 내 심장에 너무 위험한 거 아니냐고!

⠀이너 폴과 아우터 폴, 두 경계로 나뉜 세상. 이너 폴의 사람들은 '마나' 라는 매개를 사용해 번영했으며, 아우터 폴의 사람들은 그러지 못했다. 하지만 인간은 의지의 존재, 마나가 부족한 대신 그들은 지식과 경험을 토대로 '과학' 을 발전해나갔다. 이야기는 이너 폴의 한 국가 '루젠하이드' 에서 시작된다.
⠀괴로운 신음, 선혈의 피, 백성들의 비명이 끊이질 않았다. 이 자들은 왜 공주님의 목숨을 노리는 거지. 왕실 수호자인 리토나는 눈 앞의 두 소녀를 보며 생각했다. 시간이 없다. 이대로라면 당하고 말아. 리토나는 셀피네의 안전을 위해 현재 테스트 중인 불완전한 크래프트를 사용했다. 낯선 숲, 이동은 성공했지만 목표 지점이 예상 밖이다. 그래도 셀피네 님의 안전만 보장된다면, 왕국은 다시 언제든 부활할 수 있다. 리토나는 셀피네와 함께, 그렇게 정처 없이 길을 걷는다.
⠀마을, 눈 앞에 마을이 보인다. 여긴 뭔가 이질적이다. 그래, 여긴 마나가 거의 느껴지지 않는다. 설마, 아우터 폴이란 말인가. 리토나와 셀피네는 자신들이 처한 상황을 확신하기 위해 마을 사람들에게 여러가지를 묻는다. 그리고 그 과정에서 만난 '룬' 이라는 어딘지 모르게 이상한 소녀. 악의는 느껴지지 않는다. 고작 하루지만 셀피네 님은 룬을 친구로 여기시는 모양이다. 하지만 우리 '이너 폴'의 사람들은 아우터 폴에 오래 머물 수 없다. 그리고 우린 여행을 계속해 나가야 한다. 고향을 되찾기 위해.
⠀작별 인사를 하기 위해 광장에 갔을 때, 거기 나온 것은 룬이 아닌 낯선 남자였다. "어제 너희가 만난 건 사라다." 이 남자가 무슨 말을 하는 거지? 룬은, 어딨는 거야? 아니, 그녀는 정말 사라인가? 그녀가 처한 상황은 대체 무엇이란 말인가. 셀피네와 리토나는, 그녀의 진실을 알고자 이 사건을 알아보기 시작한다.

⠀완벽한 한글화, 아름답고 깔끔한 일러스트, 귀에 살살 녹는 사운드 트랙, 다음작을 기대하게 만드는 스토리 라인, 쉬운 도전과제 올클리어 등으로 제 마음을 사로잡은 부분이 많았습니다. 약간 아쉬운 점이 있다면 보이스 지원이 안 된다는 점, 그리고 느닷 없이 챕터7 후반부터 이상할 정도로 급격하게 진행되는 이야기였습니다. 레알 너무 급하게 진행되서 나는 내가 뭘 빼놓고 읽었나 싶어서 다시 돌아간 적도 한 두 번이 아니잖아. 다음 작에서는 조금 템포 조절 잘했으면 좋겠다. 헤헿, 룬룬, 셀쨩 기다려. 지금 다음작으로 만나러 갈게!

At first I was expecting this to be a "coming of age" tale about 2 girls on a journey back home- but oh man I'm so glad I was wrong. What I got out of this VN was a great tale about family and what it really means to BE part of said family, cultural differences between regions, and a bit of science and a dash of religion/fantasy. I'd definitely recommend this game to people who enjoy a story about family but also about how we as humans can be oh so different in where we grew up but at the same time be oh so similar to one another. I rate this a 9/10!

-A little bit too technical on the terminology at times (there are a few instances where they go a little TOO much into the science/mana bits and how things work but I believe this is a subjective issue.)
