Dice models hard to read...
I posted this in the general forum before i found this sub-forum...

I use TTS exclusively for RPG -- for which it is great btw. However, one complaint from my group is the dice are difficult to read sometimes. Yes i know you can zoom in, etc. But being able to see the upward face every time - especially the d20 -- can be hard. I've tried the various Dice tower models, but seeing the roll results seems to depend alot on viewing angle. Its even more difficult when trying to total multiple dice rolled at the same time -- especially if they scatter when rolled.

I have an idea that may offend some of the RPG purists among us... Can a model be added similar to the clock? that when values are input (number of faces and number of dice) it generates the random number that is easy to read.

Heck i dont really even need a model. If i could use a function in the chat box like... /roll 3d6... and have a result appear that everyone can see quickly... It would really help us focus on our game rather than trying to find and read the dice models.

Are you talking about difficulty seeing a single die (like a d20) or groups of them as a whole (like a large number of d6)? If are talking about a small number of dice, then are you holding ALT and hovering over them? I know that you mentioned zooming in but in my experience just holding the ALT key and passing the cursor over them is much more effective in dealing with weird viewing angles.

I would suggest what TRIBAL mentioned and holding ALT while mousing over the dice to read the face.

You can also size the dice up by selecting them and pressing the -/+ keys. If you have semi-lock on, you shouldn't have to worry about larger dice knocking pieces around.

Try changing their color. Setting the d20 to black for example makes it very easy to read even while small.

Just for extra knowledge if need be, to zoom in quickly, just mouse over where the die is, hit Z, and you'll quickly zoom into that location (for use with multiple die), then hit z to return to your previous viewing angle. Other than that, try adjusting your background to one with less lighting. Any outdoorsy background will result in alot of light, which can make models difficult to read.

Thanks for your suggestions. I don't think lighting is the problem, i can read the numbers just fine. And, most of the time holding alt works fine, except when it doesn't :) Sometimes -- and i haven't been able to figure out why -- but sometimes when holding alt I can't tell which die face is facing up. It acts like i picked the dice up by an edge and two faces are upward. Then i need to fuss around with the camera to get directly over the die and see which face is actually facing up.

Multiple dice rolled at the same time just add to the frustration. Thats why i asked for a console command so i wouldnt need to mess with it. I'm considering running a seperate program with my gaming group for now. Like mirc has a dice roller script; i think skype does too.

Couldn't you just make the dice a little bigger with "+"? (No sarcasm meant)

Back when the game was new, I remember a request for a little popup, like the notepad, that showed the results of whichever dice you recently rolled. I have to admit, I wouldn't mind that. Maybe with older rows faded out, and a "clear" button, to remove any rolls already displayed if you want to start fresh. I assume such a thing would be helpful for RPGs, would also be helpful for many FFG games, and games like Yahtzee.
