Using Vassal .vMod Contents for Tabletop Simulator.
Hi.

I just took a look at vassal module list, and since many tabletop games have not yet been translated, using the contents of vassal's .vmods can be used since the contents of the .vmods are in zip format.

Everything you need as far as .jpgs, .pngs, are all there for you too use.

Just use winzip, 7zip, or Winrar to extract the contents of the .vmod.

Anyway, I just thought I would mention this, and the list of Vassal Mods are extensive meaning there is a hugh list of translated hardcopies to digital there for you to take advantage of.

Here is the link to Vassal's Module List.

NOTE: If anyone does use the contents of vassals .vmods to bring them over to Tabletop Simulator, please give credit , and a thank you to the folks who took the time to translate the hardcopy to vassal.

When I first made my Arkham Horror mod, I used the contents of the Vassal .vmod file to do so. Since then, I have been working on recreating as many cards as I've been able to in Strange Eons. But having the Vassal file as a base to get everything started and to fill in anywhere I can't recreate cards, has been a huge help. I'd suggest anyone who feels like it's just too much effort to port their favorite game to TTS, take a look on Vassal and see if the game is there. Use it as a base, and improve the game as you're able, as time permits.

It really shouldn't be overly hard there are easy ways to get the images and such out. I have done it a few times for file resizing or file type changes. Would be nice though to maybe see something for easy importing. My custom module list is fairly long.

I agree, it would be nice to have a util which will view the entire image folder, and allow you to click & drag, and resize as needed. Mind you, it sounds simple but most likely could be a real headache to make.

I find that the quality of the assets for vassal are too low to be pretty on TTS. So that's my thoughts.

If creating your own from scratch then by all means. I have played a couple of TTS games, and some are not the best quality but are playable. I have taken a peek at some of Vassal's mod assets, and they do look good so I guess it would all have to do with how Vassals assets were made, and how much care was put into creating high quality images.

So far from what I have seen while playing vassal in full screen look pretty good.

I haven't had TTS for very long; can you describe how one goes about taking .vmod assets and converting them into a format that will work for TTS? You are correct in that there is no import function... Thinking there is some customize feature in the menu?

And while I'm at it: I noticed there are game saves out there but I don't see how/where to incorporate this in the "saves" directory.

You can absolutely create playable mods using vassal assets... but I wouldn't recommend it. They are such low quality. Enjoying the great artwork of a board game for me is a large part of the fun factor. There are much better alternatives. Getting the official print and play files for a game and using them to create the mod is by far the best.

As an experienced Vassal user and mpd creator, just rename a vmod to .zip or open it with an archiver program (winrar being the most common pc program) and all the images are in the image file.

TTS and Vassal both have games they're better at producing. Anything that requires turn to turn automation to speed up, Vassal has that functionality, anything that requires on the fly changing of objects, colour, or creativity, TTS is the program you want. Pretty amazing software, TTS is solid, waiting for the steam sale this winter to pick up my own copy.

@Aabra: Depends completely on the module. Modules I worked on such as Argent: The Consortium, Eclipse, and a few others all have really nice assets (innuedo much?). But a lot of people using vassal have forgone quality for size of module file.
