This whole game works on independent clients all having downloaded copies of assets.
When you join a server, any objects you still don't have (pictures, models, textures, etc) are downloaded to your computer, and then the client uses your local copy whenever it needs to load.
If they were to follow the current model, that would imply forcing people to download all custom songs whenever they joined a server with an mp3 player out.
Or, should they want to implement a new model, they would have to let the host stream its currently playing song to anyone in the room, in addition to all the data that is already streamed during regular gameplay.
It would be a bandwidth nightmare!
And that's only for the technical problems. I believe the legal problems are far worse. Streaming copyrighted music over the game is most likely illegal. Not to mention many songs are not available in specific countries due to copyright issues. Having to keep track of which music could be streamed to which country would be impracticable.
Now, before anyone mentions the tablet, I'd like to point that the tablet is nothing more than a browser window running on your local machine. The game itself isn't reproducing anything on the tablet screen, it's merely sharing the URL. For instance, if you join a server from a different country that is playing a youtube video that is blocked on your country, it will still be blocked for you, since it is loading through your local IP.
As for the current mp3 player in game, all songs on it are original compositions from the game soundtrack. They are already downloaded with your game files, and since they are original works, the game developer themselves holds the copyright for them, which is why they allow them to be played anywhere.
TL;DR
Don't get your hopes high. You're better off just playing songs from the tablet. Make a youtube playlist and that's it.
Yeah probably won't see it changed, maybe more tunes added at some point.
Is this still a plan in the works? I certianly hope so, as far as table top simulations go, I prefer to have my own music being played as I have spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours buying, making, organizing music for specific use during my campaigns, as well as sound boarding.
I am willing to attempt some programming to create the feature, but with RAM limits and such, there might be a problem with a simple mod as opposed to an official implimentation of such features.
I do like you guys' choice of music on there, but when one spends the time and dedication to creating such a library, one wants to use it. Thanks.
Then I have another suggestion: just let us choose other MP3s online, just like we import models now! 'Cause I know (like I usually do) there are a bunch of OverClocked Remixes I can use, and guess where they're initially available!
I still think it'd be neat to directly stream from the MP3 URL, though. (Not just OCRemix, either, I just mentioned it becuase it's my favorite go-to for BGM)
