Hero Forge to TTS? Surely someone's done this.
I've made a model on Hero Forge and downloaded the 3D file. Can someone help me upload it to TTS? I've followed some old directions and keep getting a "failed to load" message.

Here's what I've tried:
* Hero Forge sent me an STL file, which I converted to an OBJ with MeshLab.
* As instructed, I opened the OBJ file with TextEdit.
* I pasted the code into a Gist at GitHub and chose RAW.
* I then copied that URL and went back to TTS.
* In TTS, I clicked Objects>Components>Customs>Model, and in the Model/Mesh, I pasted the URL from GitHub.
* I think got a "failed to load" message.

Help a brother out?

Is your model under 30K polys and/or verts? TTS has a strict limit on that and will not load models going past that limit.

Edit: Checked out Hero Forge, I'm an amateur at 3D modeling but I'm going to guess those models are definitely over 30K. You'll need to take the model into blender and use the decimate modifier to reduce the poly count.

I haven't worked with Hero Forge models so I can't tell what kinks there are to their import process, but it has been done before.
I suggest asking the author of this mod:

@christopher I'd be willing to convert the model for you using unity. If you send me the file, I'll get it done for ya. Add me so we can figure out logistics.

Cleril, thanks for the reply. I've tried decimating the model and that's gotten it work; however, so much detail's lost, it's hardly worth it. I've seen so many high-detail high quality models, I'm curious why high detail HeroForge models don't work.

You can try toying about with the decimate modifier, it has a few options which might give better results. Otherwise you could try going into edit mode and seeing what you could simplify yourself. The automated tools of any software are terribly inefficient both in looks and performance. For example: if you manually create a circle in Blender it would be something like 30ish polygons. Using automated tools Blender gives you about 120ish with the same visual result.

You'll need to learn how to delete faces, the knife tool, and how to work in tris/quads (TTS will only render faces built in tri or quads, meaning 3 or 4 verts per face, no more or less). You can make things look detailed without touching TTS's limitations with some knowledge and tricks. Plus this will give you more control over what looks less detailed and what is kept more or less intact. Decimate is just going to attack everything. Do you need individually modeled fingers? Probably not, could get away with cubes.

My most recent mod had concessions made to fit within TTS limitations. Notice the stadium looking rather nice. It used to be more complex but I had to alter it ever so slightly.

The original stadium model, when edge split, went beyond 40K verts: https://i.ibb.co/1fLfvRf/abyss-kraken-stadium-unique-board.png

I'm sure such relatively minor changes can be done to any model in order to meet TTS limits.

Retopology+baking normals, which can be done with free tools such as instantmeshes and blender.
