trying to learn how to properly use custom backgrounds
i am trying to learn how to use the custom background option where i choose an image from my computer, but i'm having a hard time getting it to not be super zoomed in and pixelated.

for example i tried using the beach image from the table top simulator background tutorial thing they have. and for them it shows a nice non pixelated background change. but when i used that same image it was zoomed in and very pixelated.

Can you link to which image you are using? Whether an image looks pixelated or not usually depends on the resolution. For backgrounds it is recommended to use very large resolutions in excess of 2000 pixels of edge length.

Use a large resolution image in JPG. no bigger than 4000x4000, try to only use images in resolutions in factors of 8, i.e. 2580 x 1944 / 2816 x 2112 / 3264 x 2448 etc. Try also changing gfx settings to see if this alters image rendering, if so that's a different issue.

also, use steam cloud as image host, NOT tinyurl, drive, dropbox etc.

im gonna have to check the setting and see if that's it. and thank you for the size's to look for because i was trying to test with varying image sizes and types seeing if i could figure out with little success.

Yeah, that example is way too small and I doubt that the tutorial meant you to use that. Google for HDR backgrounds and check for resolutions.
