I've been on a few discord communities and BBG but is there any really ACTIVE communities interested in the GAME portion rather then the minis?

Every where I look everything seems to be several years old and I can rarely find anyone who talks about it even though the physical game keeps selling out within hours.

Is the actual game not really popular and people just want the minis for the building hobby?

The game is rather niche and the majority of people's attention is directed at the release of the next big expansion, The Gambler's Chest. I've had the game since 2017 and I am still actively playing it but it's not the kind of game you can really power play since once you know what you need to do at each stage of the game, that's it. there's a lot of variance for sure but the chaos of the dice and cards can snuff out your plans pretty quick. there's depth but it's not an abyss of depth....until we get the Gambler's Chest which is a whole new campaign with new mechanics and then Expansions of Death which gives us new mechanics, gear and monsters to make custom campaigns people have said all you need to say on the game itself.
You can go to Board Game Geek on the Kingdom Death forums and you'll find a lot on the game side of things. also The Great Game Hunters is a Podcast where they go over the Quarries in depth.
