Placing, rotating & flipping hex tiles on a hex grid? And hexagonal boards?
Hi! I hope this is the right place to post this and that some of you more experienced guys can help me. Before buying this, I'd like to know if you can do the following:

1) I need to make a hexgrid (as board base) and lots of hex tiles that are drawn randomly and placed on the hexgrid to form the actual playing board. These tiles must be placeable in any orientation and flippable (backside/frontside up).

2) Also, I'd like to simulate the random drawing of small round chits out of a bag. (Doesn't need to look like a bag in the simulation.)

Would that be possible to do with Tabletop Simulator? If not, I can save the money...

EDIT: Also: Can you make hexagonal boards? Or just square/rectangle ones?

1) Yes. A hex grid can be done and scaled to fit your needs, all objects can snap to this grid too. Hex tiles are easy to make too and they can have front and back side to them. Rotating objects is a basic feature of course.

2) There are bags in the game, which you can fill up with any amount of objects. When you shake them, their contents are randomised.

1. Yes, the game has a built-in grid feature, which can be hidden or shown - This grid can be scaled in both the X & Y axis to fit any hexagon regardless of it's distortion.
All objects in the game have the option to "snap to grid", with the ability to snap to the edges or centre of the grid shapes.

2. Yes, there are 2 bags built into the game. A "Storage" bag, and an "Infinite" bag.
Difference being if you put 10 coins into the storage bag, you cant draw anymore after 10, but can hold multiple different looking objects.
The infinite bag holds 1 item, but can be drawn from endlessly.

Both of these bags can have their contents "dealt" to players via right click > deal. Or players can manually drag an item out of the bag by hand.

@Mentize, Baryonyx: Thank you very much for replying & explaining! Sounds really great & looks to be just what I need. :)

The "storage bag" seems to be the thing. Do you know if there is a limit to the object it can hold?

No practical limit. but if the Json file (the file that holds all the object data, Location, names settings etc) gets really massive you can run into some issues. but thats a real outlier for a very few setups and its unlikely something you'll ever bump up against.

There is no limit, and given how TTS loads objects, you can put 1000000 unique items it without effecting the clients (it loads the object & texture once you pull them from the bag)

However the more you add, the longer "searching" will take, using the above example, if you have '1000000 ' unique objects in the bag, and you select to search it, you'll have to load those 1000000 objects before you can view the contents.

Card decks work in a similar way, and there is a guy in the TTS discord who's just made a deck with 3750 unqique cards... It works, but it's laggy :steamsad:

I'm yet to encounter a mod with causes me to lag, but i'm running a PC with higher specs than your average gamer.

Found the link to where I read about the effective .Json limit with reference to my last post

Wow, thanks really a lot, guys - again! I'm definitely gonna buy this. This commuty is nice, too. :)

Hmm... after reading a bit through the Knowledge Base I couldn't find anything about changing board shapes. Can you only create square/rectangle boards? I need to create a hexagonal shaped board. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Baryonyx Feb 14, 2018 @ 7:31am
You can create any object you like.

If you post a link to the sort of thing you want to make we can give you some pointers on the best way to go about it,

Also have you any 3D modeling experience as that will effect how you should procede.

You can make hexagonal boards by using a custom tile. Here's a link to the knowledge base regarding it: http://berserk-games.com/knowledgebase/custom-tiles/

Alternatively you can make custom 3D models and import them.

Typically people use square tables, with a hex-grid, then play on the center of the table.

If you're specifically after a HEX TABLE - you could repurpose the below mod (Just delete anything on the table and use the table for yourself)

-Yes you'd need to purchase the DLC to get this table, i couldn't find any other 6-sided tables on the workshop already.

The previous replies already covered making your own hex objects.

Hi guys & thank you - again! I should have been more specific... By "board" I meant "game board". It's a big hexagon with a hex grid printed on it, so players can place smaller hex tiles on it to fill the game board with.

I've read the custom tiles part of the knowledgebase and think I can use this to make the tiles that are placed on the game board. But the "board" part of the knowledgebase only seems to give the option of either a square or rectangular game board.

@Psyrek: Can I use the "custom tile" feature of TTS to create the game board as well? If so, can I place smaller tiles on top it?

@Mentize: Oh, you posted while I was typing :D. That looks interesting, thank you for pointing me to it! I should check that mod out. I have fond memories of Cosmic Encounter...

Yeah you can use it as a game board. A game board is really just a 3D Rectangle object. So you can really use anything as a game baord if you need to.
