The costs are listed on page 8 of the Grimoire (state 5). Demons are 3, Trolls are 2, and the rest are 1. So using the Destroy action would cost: Demon 4, Troll: 3, and the rest cost 2 mana.
If an element expands/overflows into the mana crystal room then any portals that are part of the group are also destroyed as per the above costs (D3, T2, rest 1). That's in addition to the cost for the elements.
If you have a spell that let's you move rooms you could try and use that to take out a spreading fire or overflowing water. Since e.g. 6 water = 1 mana loss (and 3 fire), or could actually be more effective to let the element reach the mana crystal.
Not sure if there is a spell that affects portals (I dot not think I have seen all of them yet).
I could see spending 2 mana, but dang, 4 for a demon. Ugh. Also, if you have the spell that let's you summon guardians (or the one that pulls a guardian towards you), you can put one in an imp or troll portal room to neutralize any imps/trolls when they spwan.
