As for the heroic, pray that you start in an isolated corner corner with a long bottleneck entrance, with an AI starting RIGHT next to you inside that only long bottleneck. It's the only way I managed. The AI will have a little break and park its army in front of you before starting the assault. If that's inside the bottleneck, chances are another AI will do the same, with fighting breaking out.
A strategy that was oddly effective is to claim all the campfires. This makes it likely for all the other factions to scout and target your campfires, making their armies to meet at the campfires and clash after destroying it while you work on your base and build an army. Just remember to keep re-claiming the campfires.
If they find your main base and begin to attack it and the heroic objective isn't complete yet, grab your army and retreat, abandon your base. Look for a new Gristmill and keep growing your army and avoiding them until the heroic objective is complete
Another thing to note is, if you don't have any Gristmills (or out of farms) but you still have control of at least one campfire, you're still in the game.
Hope this helps!
