My main concern is the unfortunate fact of screen-peeking - and that the screen is summarily cut in half or fractions. Which isn't bad per se - it can change things up in some ways - but having the option to preserve the integrity of both strategy and screen space is quite optimal for a strategy-based game.
LAN integral support could proliferate the use of pirate copies being used to play in game groups that arent internet connected. Lack of LAN helps clamp down on that. As long as you hae to pass through a server (steam) to validate your ownership of a game, they cn ensure people don't steal it.
What you propose is treating legal customers as thieves, nothing more.
