How's the co op?
Hi! I got this game from Humble and I see it has local co op. How is it?

Be aware there is no co-op (or any multiplayer) campaign, just multiplayer skirmishes - these can be played offline, against bots or other players (up to four players on one screen), or online, e.g. 2v2 with split-screen against online opponents.

Personally, I'd say the bots are only entertaining for a few games (AI is not very smart and can almost always be defeated by defensive play; even on higher difficulties, the main difference you'll notice is that they start with an income advantage, and only become slightly smarter) - playing against other humans is waaaay more interesting.

I also made a mod with co-op mode, currently just 2-4 players against endless waves of enemies, to offer a bit more co-op content. It requires more coordination and changing playstyles than against normal bots. Here's a mod pack containing an early version: https://www.toothandtailmods.com/mods/gamemode-modpack/
A new, improved (and harder) version is basically finished and will be published, soon - you can find a few screenshots on my profile, e.g.: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1655175658
I'll continue working on that one and will try to include special rules and mission objectives for co-op. Might take a while and it's just a mod, but I thought you might be interested.

*) one gamepad and keyboard+mouse is enough for 2 players

Thank you :D
The mod looks cool, my friend and I will try it!
Also, just making sure - can your mod and multiplayer against online players be played in splitscreen or will he need to own the game too?

Oh, I forgot to mention only unranked multiplayer supports 2v2 (ranked is 1v1, only).

You and your friend(s) can play split-screen from one PC, even if only one of you owns the game - you can play the mod and/or against other players online, that way. Only players on other PCs would need to own the game, as well.

The screen might be convered a bit too much by rules etc. if you play the mod in split-screen mode. Tell me if it's too much, and I'll try to come up with a solution for the next version.
The current one does not yet have pig enemies, btw. - you just fight against normal units (the ones you can build, as well).

UPDATE: The new mod version is online, now.

What a lost opportunity to not have a co-op campaign. Just got the game thinking that playing with my friend would be fun.

I have no interest outside the campaign mode.

You may be interested in the next game Pocketwatch is developing. It's still in the early stages, but it's going to be a co-op action rpg. You can follow development at https://www.twitch.tv/pocketwatch they stream most days

while you mention pocketwatch, will Tooth and Tail receive more content via paid DLCs at some point?
I hoped it would get more stuff later on and be developed further.
Wouldnt mind even buying a sequel with further developed features, content and more mechanics.
Anyone an answer in that regard?

There won't be any paid DLC. Tooth and Tail received free updates for quite a while after launch, the most recent being the map editor and steam workshop support about 3 months ago, but there aren't any new updates planned at the moment. Future updates aren't entirely ruled out, but at the moment the devs are fully focused on the next game.

Yeah i feared they would be.
Sadly i like their games but they barely receive any attention after release.
I dont mean that they dont receive updates, they do, but they then just get to the next project and leave the IP behind although it has potential.
Would have loved seeing them spending time to make a solid addon to the game. Maybe a new storyline, a new faction, a few new units, a new mapsize, a few modes.
Would easily pay the price of the main game for such an addition.
Its sad to see Tooth and Tail left behind now. Its a great game and still has potential untouched.

Thanks for the answer anyway.

I also got this from Humble Bundle. Streamed from steamlink to a bigscreen, with two Xbox controllers. We played four or five 2v2 matches against bots and had a lot of fun with it. No prior experience with the game for either of us, so it was challenging enough as we learned on the fly. Visibility seemed good for splitscreen. I did end up wanting longer match experiences, and we didn't get to trying out the largest map size to see if that did the trick.
