Anyone got any general tips for progress?
I feel like I'm getting absolutely nowhere with this. It's incredibly frustrating to lose all my upgrades when I die, I've made it to new biomes a couple of times but never been able to make it back home when I do, and I seem to run out of resources - or never be able to gather enough to upgrade - before I can really DO anything.

How long does it take for this game to really open up and let me explore without being so confined? Does anyone have any generally useful tips for progression/survival? I feel like I'm missing something very important that will actually let me enjoy this game and I have no idea what it is.

I've been playing for around 6 hours and at least for me what works is gradually upgrading the character. If you spend some time on the basics (like wood to get crystals, crystals to get upgrades) while doing short hikes out of the base you'll soon get enough upgrades to get longer trips.

Try to focus a bit on upgrading the coins, the backpack and the thing with the fuel (not sure how it's called in english) and you'll get more freedom of movement.

Get you lantern to at least 100, first thing. Only go in forest until level 2-3 town. Get 1-2 backpack upgrade asap too.

After the lantern is ready, go to the Petal biome, focus on getting lots of flowers, red for money, white for ember, both for books. Get LOTS of the flowers. Next level, upgrade the distillery (very important!) to level 2, and work to distil the white ones to bottles. You give one to the white petal guy for tons of ember, saving you quite alot. You need around 40-50 white bottles, by the end of game. And pick a distillery near a fireplace, so you can burn wood for the embers. If you are super lucky, you might get one spawning really close to town, just spent alot of time running.

Along the way, harvest the Ember flowers as well. Do not pay to upgrade them! Backpack space is crucial each time you upgrade the town. keep them only as normal. 30-40 ish total is good. Use these as fuel when outside of Petal biome.

You can drop items during a level, they do not seems to despawn with time, but they will very possibly change or disappear if you close the game. Maybe a game bug, not reloading the world properly. Upgraded stands/distilleries etc tend to vanish too. not always, but sometimes.

Work a level with your extras on the floor at camp, and pick up everything important before closing or upgrading camp! Anything on the ground during an upgrade will 100% be gone when done. That's why you need to watch how many stacks you have. You can't keep it, if you can't hold it.

Camp needs upgrading fully before you can beat the game. Focus on that. and memorize how to get advanced stuff for later. You won't need it until a quests asks for it, so don't get them yet. There are over 10 levels, and there seems to be no guides online just yet on how to find most things...

Aside from that, just enjoy the game! Its very possible to never get lost and still beat the game. <3 Have fun
@Johvi, How do you harvest the Ember Flowers? I have tried my axe, pickaxe, shears and chisel. The ember flowers *are* the big blue flowers, correct? My last quest requires ember flowers and I have been stuck.

You can harvest the blue flowers by buying the right tool. It's at one of the shops in the petal biome, but I
forget what it's called. It's not the same shop as the scissors for the the other flowers, and it may require an upgrade.

There is also a chisel in one of the shops, you need it to harvest the crystals. Those are used to distill, so are also needed.
