As far as getting better: same as with any other game, we learn from doing.
Don't let yourself get dependent on using continues. It wont help you improve.
See how far you can get on one credit and keep trying to get a little further, each time.
If you are looking for more in depth discussion;

Thank you for the advice and guidance. Am I able to add you as a friend on steam so I have someone to talk with about these types of games? I still have some more questions but I figured talking to you individually might just be better. I sent you a friend request by the way.
Also, don't just start a run, see how far you get without using a continue, and then start over once you've encountered something you don't know how to handle. That's a dreadful practice-routine, and possibly some of the worst advice to give to someone whose aim is to get better at any game without sinking way more hours into it than they need to.
If you have trouble with a stage or boss, don't play stuff you can do, practice the things you have problems with. That's what the practice mode is there for, and you should use that with reckless abandon.
Another thing about getting better is watching better people play, and copying their routes, in case you can't figure out a good way to navigate the stages on your own. If your goal is survival, scoring runs might not be the best thing to watch for a start, but some of the methods better players employ should be adjustable such that you can devise a safer approach for yourself. Of course, if you want to get into scoring, you have little choice but to copy a route from a "super-player", because those routes have been developed, tried, and tested over years, and chances are you won't reinvent the wheel, if I may be so blunt.
- Play for fun. Yes do use some continues to avoid being bored.
- Play easy modes, to get easier gratification
- Learn the game mechanics of getting boosts: using double boost as much as possible helps a lot to clear ennemies, triggering at the good time to clean up ennemy bullets, etc.
- Try a bit of all the modes, easy/hard/time attack etc.
- Watch the integrated super plays, it helps to see how the different mechanics are used (ie. collecting stars is not as useful as i thought)
- I find 1st ship and 4th ship (to unlock with stars) to be the easiests to play. 2nd is a bit complex to control the sub-ships, 3rd is too fast and shoots in a very narrow band.
