Don't sell others, you have BETTER LUCK trading it to another player, which usually buy it off at reasonable prices than selling it at vendor (for example, a wood plank may be sold at 1000 silver each, while vendor only pay 5-50)
I'd recommend trying the official discord and find the trade discord that made by one of the mods in server annoucement and trade people there if you are to sell commodities for silver.
Heck, if you want i can help you too.
I can trade those to you and then you can sell for silver if you want op
Ressources needed for any sort of crafting should NEVER be sold, just hoard that stuff, you might need it at some point, or maybe can trade it with a player for another material you need.
So as said, the only stuff you should sell is commodities, as those have no real use other than that - only you might want to take any factory buyout possible, and always have the materials you might need.
The best way to make 'Silver' in my experience, is to upgrade your Helm to improve your production of smuggling wares (rum/gin/opium/tobacco), then farm materials by raiding forts for the Helm, transform those materials into smuggler wares, then seel those - rum and gin to Scurlock, opium and tobacco to Rahma.
Don't waste your smuggler wares on Helm missions to earn Po8 (unless you got more than enough), but rather sell them for silver, then use that silver to run your factories, and soon you will be swimming in Po8 just by your Helm production.
So I usually upgrade the first category to max asap (that 1st category btw. is NOT reset on new Season, but only that one), then upgrade my empire as needed to increase factory maximum, while upgrading the faction specific ones as best regarding the factories I can claim.
As I came from S2 with 300k Po8, I grinded out the Helm asap, and "finished" 3 days ago (meaning, I got all upgrades, own all 76 factories and they are all lvl10), now I am sh*tting Po8s (~6.5k/h), with only a few minutes needed per day to keep it running.
Btw. the newly implemented mechanic of "auto-collecting" Po8s in some regions can greatly help, try to get one of those regions complete, and upgrade everything in there to lvl10. Financing a lvl10 factory will run them for 2 days, and only the most productive ones will run full in that timeframe.
But thanks to the auto collect feature, you don't need to have ships assigned to them or manually collect the Po8s, but rather just instantly collect all of it in a region for a 5% cut. Just be aware, the cut has to be payed "in advance" and will not just be reducted from your profit. So if you got 5k Po8 in a region, you have to pay 250 to collect them all.
Addendum: Other than selling them for silver, the smuggling wares also serve the purpose of buying factory licenses (and some other stuff) from Scurlock and Rahma, first to help speed up factory ownership, but later to stock up on licenses to store for next season. Like I started S3 with an assortment of 12 licenses to kick-start my Helm empire.
Oh, and it's in no way needed to "finish" the Helm like I did, there is no real purpose to it other than "because I can"
Like, a set of 10-20 profitable fatories, especially with 1-2 auto-collect regions, should be enough to finance a "casual" approach and be fine, not getting everything from the Black Market, but all the stuff you "need".
Only, while buying (lower-tier) crafting materials on the BM is quite expensive, I got more than enough to just "waste" a few 100k buying materials to upgrade ships, thus grinding out the Helm asap helps me to cut immensly down on the grind for upgrade materials.
