When trying to start the game, it tells me to install Direct Play. Is that needed and is it safe?

Direct Play is a older function of windows that is by default turned off. Just google how to re enable direct play and follow the guide, it's quite quick and simple.

The next problem you may encounter is a prompt saying something like "Unable to initialise graphics" when you click play.

You probably will get more success by going into your steamapps folder and launching the game directly after you finish with that post.
