The game was programmed in assembly for Windows 95, when people were still worried about Y2K. You simply can not get it to work properly on modern versions of windows, even with compatibility layers. At the very least we would need the developers to recompile the source code with modern assemblers, then they would need to fix bugs that arise from that. Problem is they make more money from their micro transaction filled re-releases of it, they would not make money fixing the OG version but it would cost them money...
This is where OpenRCT2 comes in, it is ultimately RCT2 reverse engineered, recompiled with some new features like multiplayer, hardware rendering, HD Resolutions, Fast-forwarding, Auto-saving, Native support for Linux and macOS, Performance improvements and various fixes and improvements for bugs in the original game.
I get wanting the OG vanilla experience, but we are talking about a game from the same era as Doom Classic. You use mods even for the vanilla experience for these games, people already had the problems you have and they made mods to fix them.
1. I made sure that DirectPlay was enabled (https://www.auslogics.com/en/articles/how-to-install-directplay-in-windows-11-and-windows-10/) Then I restarted my computer.
2. I set the compatibility settings for the program .exe file for Windows 98 and run as admin.
I'm off to build roller coaster! I'm also doing a comparison to see what features are available in RCT Classic. That runs from Steam without any special settings but it has a different user interface. I'm not sure if all the parks and rides are there, but it does have a lot. I hope that you all get your games to work too.
While i appreciate you answering (and annoying me with the OpenRCT comments, grrr) the game was working upto about a month ago through Steam. Then suddenly both 1 and 2 stopped working and now only RCT 3 works, which is what i am trying to rectify as to why they have suddenly stopped working
Go to your Steam Library.
Right Click game, RCT2.
Go to "Manage" and "Browse local files."
Right click the app icon for the game.
Go to Properties.
Click "Compatability" tab.
Under Compatability Mode, I went with Win98.
I noticed I would get an error every couple tries, but it went away and the game actually launches now. It even remembered my save file even after I had tried un/re-installing the game.
Mine works and for rct 1 maps make sure to in the options of openrct2 to link to rct1.
Other common game breaking bugs you will encounter with RCT and compatibility mode include the game requesting you insert the game CD, unable to load saved game error, crashes when loading save games and of course the random crashes after 1-2 hours of gameplay.
Don't expect help for issues when basically the only fix is openrct2, either suck it up and use it or never play the game again.
