Is OpenRCT2 legal and why is or isn't it? Also, is it safe to run?

I would like to know if its safe...

It's very safe and legal. Only works if you have a full installation of RCT2, as far as I know.
Um, why wouldn't it be legal? After all the end goal of the project is to create an open source clone of RCT2. This includes recreating all of the sprites and graphics independently. That will take a good long time to acheie.

It's completely legal. They basically rebuilt the game engine from scratch. It just needs the original game files so it can access all the textures, rides, scenarios, etc.

You wouldn't really be at risk even if it were "illegal".

Uhh. Not sure if it's ok to revive this thread, but I tried to download it (the latest build installer for x64 systems) just now and my antivirus picked it as a potential malware. Now I'm seeing some people report it as a trojan, others saying it's a false-positive, some suggesting to get it from the GitHub instead of openrct2.org, so i'm a bit concerned.

Probably a false positive. Which AV are you using?

I'm using Avira, though what did pick it as a potential threat was McAfee WebAdvisor. Since it was that, I took it with a grain of salt. But I tend to get paranoid with viruses and the like so I wanted to be certain.

That anti virus is useless so just ignore the warning.
