Hi. This sounds like a typical bug that OpenRCT2 fixes. (It has all the modern resolutions, fullscreen and windowed mode and you can minimize the game.) If you have RCT2, download, install and open OpenRCT2, then in the title screen, go to Options and the wrench tab. There you can put your RCT: Deluxe installation folder and you're good to go and play RCT1 content.

If you own RCT2 you can use OpenRCT2 to play RCT1, this is the recommend method as it fixes all bugs and adds things like modern resolutions, multiplayer, RCT2 items and well the list keeps going..

I had the same problem. What fixed it for me was to set compatability to Win98/ME on the RCT.exe. (typically found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RollerCoaster Tycoon Deluxe) I don't have all kinds of resolutions etc, but at least I got fullscreen. Openrct2 was not an option, because I don't own RCT2.

I changed the comparability mode but now the game will open and then immediately crash. I've tried everything and I can't get the game to run at all now!?

Nice! :) I will assume that setting it to any old windows version can do the trick, from Win95 to at least XP. After that might be tricky.

While looking around for a solution for my game, I did read a couple other tips too. My system is in a different language than English, so sorry for any translation errors :|

- Try running it directly from the installation folder, not through Steam. Easiest to find the file you need by browsing local files in the game properties, find the RCT exe file and open it from there.

- Turn on/off Direct Play: Press the Windows key + R. Type in "control". Go to Programs - Turn off or deactivate Windows features. You will get a new window with a list, click the + sign next to Legacy Components, and uncheck or check Direct Play. I read people had tried both, and got the game to run. I didn't touch this option.

- In addition to trying out different Win-versions for compatibility, also check to run the game as administrator, see if that helps. Run a troubleshooting for compatibility too, for good measure.

- Check that drivers are up to date, especially GPU. This is something I often check first, since I use an AMD Radeon card, and those can have issues compared to Nvidia.

Can't think of anything else to try right now, woke up too early, its only 4am and I need to get coffee :)
