depends.
This RCT (Deluxe version) is basically the same as vanilla RCT2 (with a few minor tweaks and fine tuning). You wouldn't be getting anything new from buying regular 2 over Deluxe 1 except for less scenarios.

But what RCT 2 lacked in released, it made up for in expansions. The two, Wacky Worlds and Time Twister, add a lot more interesting scenarios and alternate versions of the existing rides and stalls to match various themes. Nothing too extreme, but it does add a lot more flavor.

Between the two, if you can get RCT2 and the expansions for around the same price as RCT Deluxe, then definately buy 2. If that isnt the case, then just stick with the classic.

As far as 3 goes, if comes down to your choice. It is definately more far-out and experimental in UI and display, which can either be good or bad, but it is also the only one I know of thus far to include an actual complete sandbox and the ability to ride the roller coasters. The Soaked and Wild Expansions also add elements of water parks and wildlife parks to the mix.

Conclusion: either 2 Deluxe (1 Deluxe if it's cheaper) or 3 Platinum. That, as stated above, comes down to wether or not you like 3.

1 is far superior for 'winning' (by playing the scenarios), 2 is similar to 1 in gameplay but is better for 'sandboxing' (it has a built in landscape/scenario editor and track designer, it has scenery 'building blocks' and scenery stacking, it has massive fan created library of objects). 2 also has a nasty pathfinding bug that can kill you when trying to win scenarios if you don't spot it.

3 is 3D, has sandbox and looks nice, but AI is very, very, very buggy for scenario play, and the physics for some of the rides you create is laughable.

Personally I'd say the expansions for RCT2 barely added anything. They added some train types for multiple coasters and instead of adding it to the trains list, they made a 'new' rollercoaster type and they didn't share track layouts, making it harder to change train types if both were available. As the scenarios never challenged you to continue playing, extra scenario's didn't bother me. I only completed 3 scenario's before I returned to RCT1 (which I still play, even after 12 years).
The expansions of RCT1 also added a lot of themes and a lot of new rollercoaster types, however it might feel like you've always had those as in RCT2/3, those are the 'classic' ride types. Buy RCT1 if you want to play scenario's, RCT2 if you want sandbox (however you may never have everything enabled at the same time).

Get the mobile or the 3ds version
I was being sarcastic, don't take that seriously
But seriously though, 2 added barely anything and the scenarios are better in 1. 3 has very different gameplay. I would say get both 1 and 3. Oh and skip RCT 3d and 4mobile. (spoiler alert: One is pay to win and the other has extremely dimmed down features) OR what you can do is hold out until next year when RCT world comes out.

just add the scenarios to 2 and play them in 2, the building ability is much better, only thing i dont like in 2 is certain things away

Though I don't like the gameplay in RCT2 as much as RCT1, it did introduce a lot of new coaster types compared with RCT1. But as jensj12 says, the large number of new types is inflated, as some were the same coaster but with different train types.

I think this sums up the differences between 1 and 2 pretty well http://uk.ign.com/articles/2002/10/04/roller-coaster-tycoon-2

The biggest change was psychological, it just feels much better to complete all scenario's in RCT1 than in RCT2, just because there's literally nothing left to unlock in RCT2 (and they said it was a brand new feature).
I wouldn't wait for RCTW (however I would like to try it), as I don't see how multiplayer co-op would be more fun in tycoon games. Everybody has their own strategy and you'll often block each other (using the same land, using up all cash, idea's about coaster design and safety...).

'Group Parks' though were popular on fan sites. Different people had different skills. Good coaster builders, good landscapers, good scenery/themers, etc. They used to pass the saved game file amongst themselves to build parks.

You mean for sandbox? Yes that's more fun with more players, however I don't think playing scenario's is.

For sure. :)

I will admit, playing the original and going through the starter maps to unlock more maps and options on rides was one of the best experiences i've had in gaming (even if it was a bit tedious for a 7-year-old me that couldnt understand loans).

Perhaps it was a bit preemptive of me saying that the expansion packs for 2 were compensation for it not being much different than the original. They were without doubt lacking in comparison to what the ones for 1 did. But I still feel that they added more culture (if that is the correct word) and diversity to the franchise and, overall, weren't that bad (there is the issue with the "new" coasters being a new paint job for the other coasters without the track designs, which did bug me). I may get some people who disagree, and that's ok. We don't all like chocolate.

As far as mechanics, I hardly notice the difference between them (2 does have the option to clear scenery in a select location, which can be very helpful in the scenarios). 3 is still the odd one out, but is overall a solid entry, minus bad AI programming (if you watch Nerd Cubed, you would see he creates a coaster designed specifically for turning people into mist, with an intensity rating of 57, and the cars are all filled up with guests).

So, once again, it all comes down to your personal opinion. All are fairly strong games with same core gameplay, with changes primarily in context in execution. My suggestions above were primarily based from an economical standpoint, which shouldnt be your major deciding factor. Look over what we've all said, find what best suits your style, and enjoy it. :demoticon:

I got 1 and it has been an absolute blast....

Only complaint would be the lack of middle mouse button options for zoom and rotate...

But it has been great!

So RCT2 Triple Thrill Pack on steam does include all of RCT1 Deluxe's content? (minus the scenario's, wich you can download for rct2.
